Lawsuit Seeks To Invalidate Outgoing Pennsylvania Governor’s Censorship Statute

http://abolitionistlawcenter.org/

November 10, 2014: Pittsburgh, PA – A lawsuit challenging a Pennsylvania censorship law intended to silence Mumia Abu-Jamal and others convicted of personal injury crimes was filed today, less than one month after outgoing Governor Corbett signed the bill into law as part of his failed re-election campaign.

The Abolitionist Law Center, Amistad Law Project, and the Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center are representing Mumia Abu-Jamal, Prison Radio, Educators for Mumia Abu-Jamal, Kerry “Shakaboona” Marshall, Robert L. Holbrook, and Human Rights Coalition in a lawsuit against Attorney General Kathleen Kane and Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams that was filed today in the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Senate Bill 508 allows the Attorney General, county District Attorneys, and victims of personal injury crimes to bring a lawsuit in civil court against the person convicted of the personal injury crime to enjoin conduct that “perpetuates the continuing effect of the crime on the victim”. The actions that could prompt a lawsuit include “conduct which causes a temporary or permanent state of mental anguish.”

“This law is clearly unconstitutional. The Pennsylvania legislature and Governor Corbett wanted to use Mumia Abu-Jamal to score political points and passed a law that can’t pass constitutional muster. We’re suing Attorney General Kane and Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams before they can sue to keep Mumia from speaking publicly,” said Bret Grote, Legal Director of the Abolitionist Law Center.

Court Convicts Benton Harbor, Michigan, Community Activist with No Evidence, Fight The Frame Up Of Rev. Pinkney

http://www.bhbanco.org/

In a statement released Tuesday, Rev. Edward Pinkney said, “They are saying they don’t need evidence to send someone to prison. Now everybody in Benton Harbor is in jeopardy. We have to say enough is enough.  Here, Whirlpool controls not only Benton Harbor and the residents, but also the court system itself. They will do anything to crush you if you stand up to them. That’s why it’s so important to fight this.”

Capitalism = racism, mass incarceration, police terror, endless war and occupation, unemployment, low wages and union-busting, sexism, anti-LGBTQ bigotry, homelessness, anti-immigrant attacks, discrimination against people with disabilities.

The capitalist system is to blame! What will it take to defeat it?

We are in the midst of a deepening capitalist global crisis, which has unleashed imperialist war on Iraq, Syria, Gaza, Africa and the world, and militarized racist police terror here at home. It has brought about the widespread impoverishment of the working class and oppressed peoples, many of them migrants and women, on a worldwide basis.

At the same time, we have witnessed the heroic resistance of the people, especially the youth of Ferguson, Mo., Palestine, and Ukraine — and the rising movement of low-wage workers at home and abroad.

What better time for revolutionary socialists to get together and discuss our perspectives and strategies for building a struggle for revolutionary socialism.

In the words of Che Guevara: “The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.”

This gathering will strengthen you politically. There, you will get a chance to talk to and meet with revolutionary socialists of all ages and nationalities from around the country.

Be prepared to not only listen, learn and discuss, but afterwards to go back to your city, town or region ready to fight for an anti-capitalist, pro-socialist future.

Milwaukee, November 6: Show Up, Speak Out: Fire and Police Commission Meeting, Justice For Dontre Hamilton!

EVENT: http://tinyurl.com/khcmvd7

On April 30 Dontre Hamilton was shot 14 times in Red Arrow Park by Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher Manney. This officer has since been released from his post, but has appealed his firing to the Fire and Police Commission (the governing body of our local police force).

This Thursday, the Fire and Police Commission will meet at the Washington Park Senior Center (4420 West Vliet Street) to discuss his appeal and possibly give him his job back. We can not allow this to happen. We must show up in numbers and in force to let the commissioners know that what Manney did was Unconstitutional, immoral, and inhumane, and that we do not want an officer like that patrolling our streets.

Please join us at 5pm outside of the Senior Center for a small rally. We would like to walk in as a united front, standing against injustice in our community, so please try to arrive on time. We will Win! See you Thursday.
