For a second time in two years, people from all over the U.S. along with members of parliament, lawyers and labor representatives from other countries will embark on a series of actions in the U.S. capital, beginning on May 30 and ending on June 5, to advocate for the release of the Cuban 5.

The Cuban 5 are five Cuban nationals who were accused and convicted of conspiracy charges against the United States. In fact, however, The Five’s actions were never directed at the U.S. government. Their sole mission was to monitor Florida-based terrorist groups who had been relentlessly launching terrorist attacks against their country of Cuba. Activities of the week will include citywide outreach, public meetings, press conferences, a Hip Hop cultural event and several days of lobbying the Congress and Senate.

Partial list of participants in the five-day event series include Angela Davis, Father Miguel D’Escoto, former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Ignacio Ramonet (former editor of La Monde Diplomatique), Dolores Huerta, Fernando Morais (Brazilian author), Danny Glover, Rev. Joan Brown Campbell, Saul Landau and many others.

On May 30, Father Miguel D’Ecosto, a former Foreign Minister of Nicaragua, will, along with other guests, hold a press conference at the National Press Club.

On June 1, buses from New York City, Quebec and other cities will be joining a significant number of Cuban Americans from Miami and activists from all over the U.S. at a rally in front of the White House to tell President Barack Obama: “Free the Cuban 5.”

The “5 Days for the Cuban 5 in Washington D.C.” was initiated by the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 and sponsored by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS). The International Committee is a network of concerned citizens from several countries of Europe, Latin America and the United States. The main objective of the International Committee is to raise awareness about the case of the Cuban 5.

• THE BANKS OWE US – The big banks caused the financial crisis in Detroit with their racist, fraudulent, predatory mortgage loans that resulted in 237,000 people being driven out of the city as a result of losing their homes to foreclosures

• PROSECUTE THE BANKS – They conspired with the rating agencies to manipulate interest rates, saddled Detroit with billions in penalties and continue to loot the city’s tax revenues to fatten their profits. The same banks refuse to pay taxes on the properties they seized ($50 million last year alone).

• FIGHT THE EMERGENCY MANAGER – The EM’s job is to make sure that the criminal bankers are paid first – it’s spelled out in the law. Wages, city services, pensions, Belle Isle, the Water Department are all to be slashed or sold to pay off the $16.9 billion in debt service, $4.9 billion of which is interest or profits for the banks.

• STOP PAYING THE CRIMINAL BANKS – The only solution is to put a moratorium on debt service. Let’s fight to restore city services, end pay cuts to city workers, protect pensions, stop union busting and keep valuable city assets. Put people’s needs before bankers’ greed.

Tribute to Ms. Rosa Parks’s Life of Activism

Friday, April 26, 7 pm

Central United Methodist Church (25^th St. & Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee)

On Friday, April 26, at 7:00 pm, a diverse group of community organizations will sponsor a celebration of the lifelong activism of Rosa Parks, with special guest Jeanne Theoharis, author of The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks, at Milwaukee’s Central United Methodist Church, 639 N. 25^th Street (at Wisconsin Avenue). The event is free and open to the public, with free off street parking south of the church.

According to MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry, “At last, Jeanne Theoharis answers the question, who was Rosa Parks? The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks will undoubtedly be hailed as one of the most important scholarly contributions to Civil Rights history ever written.” Julian Bond, Chairman Emeritus of the NAACP, also praised Theoharis’s new biography: “In the first sweeping history of Parks’ life, she shows us a long-time activist, committed to fight white supremacy from her earliest days, and continuing that fight when her notoriety forced her to relocate to Detroit.… Rosa Parks not only sat down on the bus, she stood on the right side of justice for her entire life.”

This event will include music and light refreshments, visual displays of artwork related to  Rosa Parks from AYZHA Fine Arts Gallery and others, and a discussion of The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks through a talk and live interview format with author Jeanne Theoharis.  A book signing will occur after the program.

Jeanne Theoharis is professor of political science at Brooklyn College of CUNY. She received her AB in Afro-American studies from Harvard College and a PhD in American culture from the University of Michigan. She is the author or coauthor of six books and numerous articles on the Black freedom struggle and the contemporary politics of race in the United States.
