Congressman Hansen Clarke will join supporters of Jennifer Britt and her family Monday noon, July 23, at the vigil opposing the court-ordered eviction brought by Fannie Mae against Ms. Britt.

At the rally and press conference at the Britt home, Congressman Clarke will announce his support of community advocates and friends who are calling on Fannie Mae to cancel the eviction and work to keep Ms. Britt and her family in their home. In response to phone calls and a demonstration at the Federal building, the Detroit offices of U.S. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, along with Congressman John Conyers, have also questioned Fannie Mae’s actions.

Outpost has thus far not agreed to participate, but the workers have a spot on the agenda for Monday’s meeting, and they need to pack the room with members who are supporters in order to move Outpost on this.

The Eviction Defense Committee of Occupy Detroit began its vigil at daybreak on Thursday with 45 people massed in front of Jennifer Britt’s home in Detroit’s Rosedale Park. More than 100 neighbors and supporters joined the vigil over the course of the day, and continuing shifts of supporters are signing up to defend Jennifer’s home Friday and over the next week. Fox 2 reported on the vigil in its 11pm broadcast last night, including an interview with Jennifer surrounded by cheering supporters.

You can join this peaceful and determined opposition to another unjust eviction in whatever capacity you are comfortable with– as witness, supporter, resister. We will oppose the placing of the dumpster in front of the home in a nonviolent manner, making a statement with our numbers.

The house is located at 15701 Warwick St., south of Grand River. Supporters are welcome at any time, but it helps if we know how many will be there thru the days to come. If you can, contact us at DetroitEvictionDefense@gmail.com and let us know the hour(s) and day(s) you can stand with Jennifer.

The eviction order was signed on Wednesday by Judge Nancy Blount of 36^th District Court. Flagstar Bank had refused to modify Jennifer Britt’s mortgage and loaded it with mounting fees and penalties that exhausted Jennifer’s savings. After foreclosing in 2010, Flagstar sold the mortgage to Fannie Mae, the government-sponsored mortgage company under federal receivership since 2008. After paying off Flagstar with taxpayer money, Fannie Mae now seeks Jennifer’s eviction.

Call the Federal Housing Finance Agency and Fannie Mae and tell them to sell Jennifer Britt’s home to Southwest Housing Solutions so Jennifer and her family can stay in their house at 15701 Warwick, Detroit. Fannie sells to for-profit investors at below market, so why not sell the home to a non-profit like Southwest at a price based on its appraised value? Southwest has pledged to sell the home back to Jennifer at an affordable price. Phone calling keeps the issue in front of these officials: Detroit doesn’t need another empty house blighting the neighborhood!
