Oklahoma and the school strike surge

Marching into mass rally at Capitol building in Oklahoma City, April 9, 2018.
Going forward, Oklahoma educators deserve solidarity to consolidate their gains, to make their unions more militant and to confront new efforts by right-wing politicians. Punitive legislative moves include a ballot proposal to reverse the tax increases that the struggle won, as well as anti-strike measures.
But given the historic and continuing stranglehold of big business, purely electoral struggle is not the answer. For education workers, keeping a focus on building independent social and worker power will be decisive.
Education workers’ movement still growing
The Oklahoma actions, like those in West Virginia and Puerto Rico, are inspiring education workers in other localities, including Kentucky, Arizona, Colorado and Wisconsin. https://www.workers.org/2018/04/19/oklahoma-and-the-school-strike-surge/
Milwaukee, April 20: Voces de la Frontera Fundraiser
Right here in Wisconsin, ICE is arresting and detaining undocumented fathers, leaving moms and kids with rent to pay, food to buy, and no income.
Now that the Republican Congress has failed to pass an extension of the Dream Act, DACA recipients will soon face deportation. And the end of the “Temporary Protected Status” program exposes thousands of refugees to deportation as well.
THIS IS WRONG.
Voces de la Frontera is fighting locally and nationally for immigrant rights. Helping threatened immigrant families takes money. We invite you, your friends, and your organizations to join us in a Fundraiser for Voces de la Frontera

WI AFL-CIO Calls On Members To Support Informational Picket Line of Milwaukee Educators and Supporters April 24, 2018
The Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association will be holding an Informational Picket on Tuesday, April 24th from 4:30pm-6:30pm at MPS Central Office, 5225 W. Vliet St., Milwaukee, WI 53208. Please join educators, parents, students, and community members to fight for a just budget!
Last week, over 1,200 Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA) members, parents, students and supporters packed Milwaukee Public Schools Central Office, filling three overflow rooms and hallways with educators, parents, and students demanding a budget that honors the classroom and education workers.
MTEA’s demands are simple:
• Keep budget cuts away from schools!
• Time for teachers and educational assistants to meet the needs of their students.
• Quality, affordable healthcare for ALL full-time education workers – including subs!
• Raises to attract and retain the education workers our students deserve.
MPS Administration has accepted and passed along years of budget cuts and austerity to Milwaukee Public School students and classrooms. Tattered textbooks, crowded classrooms, and shrinking art, music, and physical education programs are just a few of the consequences students and educators face thanks to Scott Walker’s unprecedented public education cuts. Enough is enough!
Click here to let the MTEA know you’re coming to join educators, students, and families at the 4/24 Picket to Defend our Schools outside MPS Central Office at 5225 W Vliet St., Milwaukee, WIfrom 4:30-6:30pm!
See you on the picket line!
In Solidarity,
Phil Neuenfeldt, President
Stephanie Bloomingdale, Secretary-Treasurer

Chicago, April 21, 2018: STOP the WARS! March and Rally!
Hosted by Chicago Anti-War Coalition
Michigan Avenue & Congress Expressway, 12 Noon
— En español abajo —
The U.S. government has been at war for over 16 straight years. It has killed hundreds of thousands of people and devastated several countries in the Middle East and Africa, creating millions of refugees, all in flagrant violation of international law and the Constitution. It continues to regularly bomb and drone-strike in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Somalia and is funding a murderous covert drug war in Mexico. Now it is threatening new wars against North Korea, Iran and Venezuela, and has adopted a dangerously more aggressive policy on nuclear war, while engaging in dangerous brinkmanship with Russia.
The result? We have literally been made to pay TRILLIONS of dollars to make our lives LESS safe and secure. This money has benefited only the wealthy owners of energy, weapons and other corporations, while millions of working people in Chicago and around the nation, especially communities of color, struggle to survive. Every bomb that’s dropped and every missile that’s fired is a theft from our communities, robbing us of the good quality jobs, schools, public services, infrastructure improvements and just transition to a clean energy future that should be created instead.
These wars have also devastated our environment. In addition to contaminating the nations under attack, the military is a huge consumer of fossil fuels and the wars are mainly being waged for rich corporate owners to control supplies of oil, natural gas and other valuable resources in order to profit from their consumption. Thus, these wars are major contributors to catastrophic climate change.
It’s time to stand up and say ENOUGH is ENOUGH! END the WARS at HOME and ABROAD! If you have had enough of war, please JOIN US on Saturday, April 21st, marking Earth Day, for a RALLY and MARCH, beginning with a rally at noon at Michigan Ave. and Congress Expressway in Chicago, and marching to the Tribune Tower at 435 N. Michigan Ave. for a concluding rally. Featured speakers will include Dr. Anne Scheetz of Physicians for a National Health Program, journalist Randi Nord and Kathy Kelly of Voices for Creative Non-Violence.
