Aug. 29th: National Call-In Day for Oscar Lopez Rivera!
National Call In Day for Oscar Lopez Rivera
This month’s guest endorser is Long time Brooklyn based activist/community leader and Executive Director of UPROSE:
The current ecological and economic crises faced by Puerto Rico is a direct consequence of everything that Oscar Lopez gave his life and freedom to prevent. His life is no different than that of liberators all over the world and the US, who fought for human rights and dignity. His release would be an affirmation of justice and fair play by President Obama, and the Puerto Rican community which delivered Florida in his election & has consistently supported him, we will make this commitment to remedying this injustice, a part of his legacy. Join us on Saturday August 29th and make a phone call for Oscar Lopez Rivera.-Elizabeth Yeampierre
On the 29th of each month, we’re asking all our allies and supporters to CALL THE WHITE HOUSE AND
Call President Obama at 202-456-1111 and leave a message! Let him know that Oscar Lopez Rivera has been in prison for too long and deserves to go home!
We need to flood the voice mail with our united demands for freedom!
Sample Message for your phone call:
President Obama, I ask that you free Puerto Rican Political Prisoner, Oscar Lopez Rivera. Since 1981, he has been in jail for fighting for Puerto Rican independence; he never committed a violent crime and has been a model prisoner. I ask that you follow in the foot steps of Presidents Truman, Carter, and Clinton, who freed other Puerto Rican activists, and set Oscar free!
Milwaukee, August 21: Radical Resistance. Resilience.
— George Jackson
The Coalition for Justice realizes the importance of building, and engaging with our community and created an opportunity to do just that.
On Friday, August 21, 2015 we will host a free event in solidarity with Black August.
Black August is a month long observation honoring Black people and events that have contributed to the freedom and liberation of Afrikan people. It is a tradition that involves community building, fasting, physical training, reading/studying, reflection, and self-discipline. Started in the prisons, Black August has grown to be respected and practiced by thousands beyond the walls.
We will embrace the principles of unity, self-sacrifice, political education, physical training and resistance. There will be workshops and family events going on throughout the day. At 7 p.m. the event will close out with a concert put together by The Alternative.
This free event is for everyone and will be happening all day long. Please consider coming out to help engage and build the community around issues that matter to them most.
This all day event will take place at All Peoples Church: Havenwoods Campus: 5975 N. 40th Street.

The Civil Rights Movement in the US: Fiftieth Anniversary of the Watts Rebellion
August 11, 1965 represented a turning point in the struggle for African American liberation
Just five days after the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Watts Rebellion erupted lasting several days.
“…Today urban rebellion remains a key element in the struggle of the African American people against national oppression and economic exploitation. Since 2012, with the vigilante killing of Trevon Martin and the resultant acquittal of George Zimmerman, a rising consciousness and intolerance for racism has been rapidly accelerating.
When 18-year-old Michael Brown was gunned down by Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014, a rebellion erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, prompting mass demonstrations throughout the U.S. and around the world. Another rebellion in Baltimore during late April of this year, further illustrated the reemerging militant character of the African American people.
These rebellions and demonstrations must be organized into an independent revolutionary movement. The U.S. capitalist system fundamentally has nothing to offer oppressed youth in the way of jobs, economic opportunities, quality education and decent housing.
The plight of African Americans and other oppressed nations have not been addressed at all by the current administration of President Barack Obama. Presidential candidates for the Democratic and Republican nominations are conveniently sidestepping the question of the national oppression of the people of color communities.
Such a political atmosphere provides vast avenues of opportunity for a revolutionary movement to organize these constituencies in opposition to the ruling class. The unrest in Ferguson surrounding the first anniversary of the killing of Michael Brown illustrates that people are ready to fight and only needs the effective organization to give expression to their social and political aspirations.” http://tinyurl.com/np8tozz
Madison, August 12: Madison Pressing Forward: The Fight for Justice for Tony Robinson and to End Police Brutality
Madison Pressing Forward: The Fight for Justice for Tony Robinson and to End Police Brutality
CALLING ALL PEOPLE AS WE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE! In the five+ months since the MPD shooting and killing of unarmed 19 year old Tony Robinson, over 520 lives have been taken by police officers across the U.S. In Madison, the confrontation of Black people by police has jumped to 11 Black people for every 1 White person, up from 8:1 last year. More police involvement means more likelihood of intimidation, fear and death. The movement for change continues to push ahead with accountability and a demand for meaningful investigation. We must stop state sanctioned and MPD approved violence. EVERYONE IN THIS MOVEMENT, PLEASE JOIN the Robinson-Irwin family on WED AUG 12 at 4:30 PM (CST) at the Dr MLK Blvd steps of the WI State Capitol for an important press conference announcement regarding upcoming actions in the case of Tony Terrell Robinson Jr. #JUSTICEFORTONY #TRUTHFORTERRELL
This Wednesday, YGB will be standing in solidarity with Tony “Terrel” Robinson’s Family at 4:30 pm. at the State Capitol MLK Entrance
Support ATU 998: Tell Chris Abele to Negotiate or Arbitrate Now
from the wi-afl-cio:
The 750 bus drivers and mechanics of the Milwaukee County Transit System continue to fight for a fair contract. The members of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 998 consistently work long hours day and night to provide safe, quality transportation in Milwaukee. They have waited long enough for a fair contract.
Bus drivers are coming together to stop the conversion of family-supporting full-time jobs to part-time positions. This dangerous race to the bottom for wages and benefits is the wrong direction for Wisconsin and bus drivers are taking a stand for all of us. County Executive Chris Abele should put the best interest of all of Milwaukee County first and settle the contract without delay.
Tell Chris Abele to negotiate or arbitrate now.
We are proud to join in solidarity with transit workers who are standing up forfamily-supporting full-time jobs, good benefits, and decent working conditions in order to deliver high-quality bus services to Milwaukee County residents.
ATU Local 998 went on a three-day work stoppage in early July after talks on a new contract broke down. Hiring more part-time workers instead of full-time, pensions and adequate bathroom breaks are among the concerns. Bus drivers require unique training and experience in order to calmly manage and deal with a variety of unique and difficult situations that may arise en route. Bus drivers and mechanics are coming together to stand up for quality family-support jobs and a strong middle class.
Send an email to Chris Abele urging him to negotiate and arbitrate without delay.
