Federal Court Rules Wisconsin Redistricting Map Must Be Redrawn

Latino Civil Rights Upheld

In a momentous decision, a federal court ruled that the State of Wisconsin cannot use the newly drawn redistricting maps for Assembly Districts 8 and 9.  This ruling affirms Voces de la Frontera’s legal challenge that the map violates the civil rights of Latino voters under the Voting Rights Act.

In October 2011, Voces de la Frontera filed a lawsuit on the basis that Wisconsin’s newly-approved legislative redistricting map deprives the Latino community on Milwaukee’s south side of an effective voting majority in the 8th Assembly district.

According to Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera:

“This is a vindication, that we were right. If the Republican Party had chosen to honor the public process—instead of operating secretly—there would have been the opportunity for a meaningful discussion and debate.  Instead, it only serves as a lengthy and costly lesson.”

Attorney Peter Earle noted that the legislature has now been charged with crafting a remedy and Voces de la Frontera will insist that this time around, the legislative process must be open, inclusive and transparent.

“There will be no place for secrecy agreements. Most importantly, the new 8th Assembly district must have a Latino citizen voting age majority of 60%,” says Earle.

“The Student Bill of Rights represents the voice of over one thousand students from the MPS and RUSD school districts, and their insights and hopes to achieve a better education. These students are all part of a rising movement to defend public education, elevate student voice within their own education, and create equal opportunity and quality education for all students,” says Santiago Chavez, a YES leader and senior at Hamilton High School.

The document was produced through the collaboration of over 1000 students across the state, and there will be an MPS school board committee hearing on Thursday March 22nd.  A rally at Hamilton High School will be held prior.

Prosecute the killer of our son, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin

From Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, the parents of Trayvon Martin:

Why This Is Important

On February 26, our son Trayvon Martin was shot and killed as he walked to a family member’s home from a convenience store where he had just bought some candy. He was only 17 years-old.

Trayvon’s killer, George Zimmerman, admitted to police that he shot Trayvon in the chest. Zimmerman, the community’s self appointed “neighborhood watch leader,” called the police to report a suspicious person when he saw Travyon, a young black man, walking from the store. But Zimmerman still hasn’t been charged for murdering our son.

Trayvon was our hero. At the age 9, Trayvon pulled his father from a burning kitchen, saving his life. He loved sports and horseback riding. At only 17 he had a bright future ahead of him with dreams of attending college and becoming an aviation mechanic. Now that’s all gone.

When Zimmerman reported Trayvon to the police, they told him not to confront him. But he did anyway. All we know about what happened next is that our 17 year-old son, who was completely unarmed, was shot and killed.

It’s been nearly two weeks and the Sanford Police have refused to arrest George Zimmerman. In their public statements, they even go so far as to stand up for the killer – saying he’s “a college grad” who took a class in criminal justice.

Please join us in calling on Norman Wolfinger, Florida’s 18th District State’s Attorney, to investigate my son’s murder and prosecute George Zimmerman for the shooting and killing of Trayvon Martin.
