Madison rally TODAY (3-15): Stop the Hostile Takover of MATC!

From AFT Local 212:

Yesterday the legislative attack on MATC, SB 275, that dissolves the MATC board and gives board appointment power to two counties that represent less than 8% of the colleges’ students and less than 18% of its funding  passed the Wisconsin Senate.

It is a power grab that will lead to dismantling important functions and programs at the state’s only minority majority college. Just last week Mark Belling said MATC shouldn’t have a nursing program. Critical programs like child care, the bilingual program, public safety, food service, and IT are at risk as are academic programs like the Adult High School, professional development and Early Childhood Education.

Glen Grothman is smearing our students to justify his hostile takeover.

We need YOU to join us in Madison tomorrow when the bill will be voted on in the Assembly. We will tentatively leave the 212 office, 739 West Juneau,  at 4:30 pm. We will rally in Madison at 6:30 pm.

Email mrosen@local212.org <mailto:mrosen@local212.org>  to confirm that you will come to Madison to defend MATC.

We are going to Madison to tell the MATC haters that we will not allow them to disenfranchise our students and city of Milwaukee residents. We will not allow them to destroy the college that has served this community for 100 years!

We need to have a major presence at the legislature.

Please email now at mrosen@local212.org <mailto:Mrosen@local212.org>  to confirm your participation.

ILPS Resolution on Postal Struggle

International League of Peoples Struggle statement (3-14-2012):

The International Coordinating Committee of the International League of Peoples Struggle condemns the plans of the US government to decimate the US Postal Service with layoffs, job cuts, closings and service cuts. We therefore support the Campaign to Save Postal Jobs and Services and the mass protests planned for March 17, the 40th anniversary of the heroic postal strike of 1972.

Unlike the Pentagon, the US Postal Service is not losing money; the labor of postal workers is producing a profit. US Postal boss Patrick Donohoe is paid $384,000 a year. This greedy parasite and other Wall Street-loving politicians want to destroy the Postal Service as a bastion of organized labor in order to drive down the wages and benefits of the entire working class. They want to turn this vital public service, so needed especially by seniors, the poor, and rural communities, over to greedy private companies. This is a crime!

It is a crime to destroy 200,000 union jobs at a time of record unemployment. It is a crime to destroy a major potential source of jobs for youth, especially from poor and oppressed communities. We support the demands of the Campaign to Save Postal Jobs and Services: Corporate hands off the Post Office! Not one layoff, cutback or Post Office closimg! Stop firing, start hiring! Wall Street hands off the public sector! Shut down US military bases and the Pentagon, not vital public services! Solidarity with the March 17 mobilization!

Postal workers march in Detroit August 23, 2010.
