WI Flyer: https://wibailoutpeople.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/wi_obama_flyer.pdf

The leaflet reads in part:

” President Obama must take action through executive order to defend our rights to our jobs and our homes.  Just as the Presidents bypassed Congress to wage wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, President Obama must bypass Congress to declare a war on unemployment and foreclosures and evictions that are destroying our communities…

…The Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act of 1978, Section 3111, mandates that when high unemployment persists (ie during a jobless recovery) the President is required to initiate supplementary programs to reduce unemployment.  Included among these programs are (1) accelerated public works programs (2) public service employment; (3) State and local grant programs; (4) extending unemployment insurance; skill training in both the private and public sector; and (6) youth employment programs…

…In the 1930’s, as a direct result of the mass struggles of the unemployed and unions, 25 states implemented Moratoriums on Foreclosures.  The Michigan Moratorium Act outlawed foreclosures for 5 years.  In addition, the federal WPA, Works Progress Administration, put 8 million people to work, building schools, highways, bridges and dams which are still functioning today.  It was people hitting the streets in the millions that won these victories.  It’s time to revive that movement to guarantee our rights to jobs and housing, and to demand that President Obama represent the workers and poor who elected him, not the billionaires, bankers and generals who are setting policy today.”

As Economy Lags, New Study Reveals 25 Top Firms Pay More to CEOs than in Taxes

http://www.democracynow.org/2011/9/1/as_economy_lags_new_study_reveals

A new study reveals that 25 of the nation’s largest corporations paid more money to their CEOs last year than they did to the federal government in income taxes. Often using overseas tax havens, many of the corporations managed to make billions in profits but paid little to nothing in federal taxes. In many cases the companies received large tax rebates. The list includes some of the country’s best-known companies, such as Ford, Coca-Cola, Verizon, General Electric and eBay. The same study found that the ratio of CEO pay to that of the average worker in the United States jumped to 325-to-1 last year. We speak to the study’s co-author, Chuck Collins, a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies and director of its Program on Inequality and the Common Good. “What these companies do is they use a variety of tax loopholes, corporate loopholes, to game down their taxes. So, these are what I would call the sort of champion in the tax gymnastics department,” says Collins. [includes rush transcript].

Over 2,000 in West Allis tell Nazi’s: ‘Get Out!’

In West Allis Sept. 3 over 2,000 counter-protesters came out on Labor Day weekend and in the pouring rain to tell the Nazi’s that their hatred, racism and anti-union stance should get out of town. The Nazi’s held a brief ‘rally’ at city hall where they were directly confronted by a multinational, intergenerational crowd of counter-protesters holding signs such as “Jobs Not Hate,” and banners declaring slogans such as: “West Allis Says NO To Racism & Union-Busting.” Protected by well over 150 police from all over Metro Milwaukee and beyond which cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Nazi’s were drowned out by the crowd and their chants such as “Hey, Ho, Hey, Ho Nazi Hate Has Got To Go.” A coalition of over 30 organizations throughout Metro Milwaukee mobilized for over two weeks for the counter-protest. Delegations of counter-protesters from Madison, Green Bay, Detroit and elsewhere came out to confront the Nazi’s. The morning of Sept. 3 the L.U.V. Brigade and other African American community organizations held an anti-Nazi event at Red Arrow Park in downtown Milwaukee. Participants of this event then traveled to West Allis to join the counter-protesters there.

9/11 Unity

http://www.iacenter.org/actions/911flyer083111/

Extreme right-wing, racist forces, who last year whipped up a climate of hate against the Islamic Prayer Center at 51 Park Place, have announced ugly new plans for this year — the 10th anniversary of 9/11 — at the same location near the World Trade Center site.

This is a very dangerous threat. Anders Breivik, the racist, right- wing Norwegian responsible for the recent mass murder of 77 mostly young people in Norway, has quoted extensively from the writings of Pamela Geller of Stop Islamization of America and Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch. These are the two organizations opposing the Islamic Prayer Space at 51 Park Place.

Last year the media claimed that these well-financed hate groups represented the views of a great majority of the population. Many of us considered it a responsibility to show that they do not speak for the people of New York City. We organized, with the help of many thousands who responded, a far larger and dignified outpouring to stand for unity, respect and solidarity and against racism, war and anti-Muslim bigotry.

This year it is more important than ever that we do not allow these racist hate mongers to be the only voices speaking to the media and to the world. It is especially important to counter, in this period of economic crisis, the forces that want to blame immigrants and Muslims for the growing cutbacks in social services, rising unemployment and continuing wars.

On Sept 11 we will hold a rally, march and cultural exhibition.

Come and pick up flyers. Spread the word to family, neighbors and co-workers. Attend a Wednesday Sept 7 planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. at 55 W 17th St, #5C in Manhattan.

Call For Submissions: Anthology Of Voices From 2011 Wisconsin Uprising

The Rise Up! Wisconsin Collective

Call for Submissions: Anthology showcasing radical and progressive stories and voices from the 2011 Wisconsin Uprising

The Rise Up! Wisconsin Collective invites you to submit to an anthology which will give expression to the diverse origins and broad participation in the struggle for Wisconsin’s future. Since Gov. Walker’s assault on us all, there has been increased media attention on our state be…cause of the mass protests by organized labor, community groups, and students. Recent attention has turned to the electoral field as recall elections proceed. But very little is being written or published that approaches the politics and history of Wisconsin’s popular uprising through a radical lens. By “radical,” we mean getting at the root of a problem and transforming it into a community we can all participate in and be a part of. It also means viewing the assault by the Republicans and corporations as tied to the restructuring of global capitalism, and the parallel movements for survival by Wisconsin’s marginalized communities.

Our hope is to create an anthology that illuminates the origins of Wisconsin’s popular struggle as a consequence of interlocking grassroots work. We are especially interested in hearing from progressive workers as well as organizers from immigrant, indigenous and communities of color, LGBT, disability and women’s communities. What we hope to show is that this is not just a “union” struggle, in a restrictive sense, but a struggle to redefine progressive politics itself.

Ideas for submissions could include:

first-person accounts
testimonials
blog entries
poems
visual art work
cartoons
sticker designs
stencils
interviews
photographs
oral histories

Please send submissions and a short bio including contact information (name, email, or the best way to contact you) in Word or PDF as well as within the body of the text to: riseupwi@gmail.com Please put “Rise Up! Wisconsin Anthology submission + [your last name]” in the subject line.

* We recommend keeping your submissions to under 10 pages – please contact us if you intend to submit something larger.
* We accept previously published work, but preference will be given to voices that have fewer resources for having their voice in print.

Deadline for Submission: October 1, 2011.

Please forward this call to those you think would be interested!
