End Intimidation of Workers at UW-Madison!

Sign Petition: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/end-intimidation-of-union-organizers-at-uw-madison

In the spring of 2017, members of the United Faculty and Academic Staff union (UFAS, AFT Local #223) came together to advocate for fair wages and working conditions for Faculty Assistants at UW-Madison. Their campaign was resoundingly endorsed by the Academic Staff Assembly, Faculty Senate, Teaching Assistants Association, and the Associated Students of Madison. In response, university adminstration agreed to increase wages and re-classify many Faculty Assistants under more appropriate job titles.

In retaliation, English as a Second Language Program Director Sandy Arfa informed two leading activists, Alyssa Franze and Jambul Akkaziev, that they will no longer have employment in the program after years of dedicated service. Such retaliation is intended to intimidate employees and discourage them from having a voice in their workplace. UFAS denounces worker intimidation at UW-Madison in the strongest terms and demands the reinstatement of Alyssa Franze and Jambul Akkaziev to the ESL Program.

We, the undersigned, are concerned University of Wisconsin staff, faculty, students, and alumni as well as community members and supporters. We call for the full reinstatement of UFAS members Alyssa Franze and Jambul Akkaziev to the English as a Second Language Program and for an end to worker intimidation at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Rethink Afghanistan: Then and Now

http://rethinkafghanistan.com/then-and-now.php

In January 2009, the media narrative in the U.S. favored increasing the number of troops in Afghanistan, bending the public opinion in favor of the same. Understanding the national catastrophe waiting in the wings if lives and scarce national resources were wasted on a military “fix” to a political problem, Brave New Foundation launched Rethink Afghanistan.

Our latest report Rethink Afghanistan: Study of Effectiveness and Messaging Success details the goals of our campaign and how the campaign was ultimately successful. We launched this campaign to convince the public and policymakers that escalation would not make us safer and was not worth the costs. Three years later only 30% of Americans now believe that the Afghanistan War has been worth fighting. Thank you to our donors and activists who helped make all of this possible. Please help us continue the conversation with our new campaign War Costs. We need your support to put renegade defense spending.

Statement by 62-member U.S. delegation to International ‘In the footsteps of Che’ Brigade

October 4, 2017

We strongly condemn the decision of the United States government to expel 15 Cuban diplomats from the United States in response to alleged “sonic attacks” against U.S. diplomats in Cuba. These allegations are unfounded and part of the Washington’s campaign to discourage the people of the U.S. from traveling to Cuba to witness the accomplishments of the Cuban Revolution. Our delegation stands in solidarity with Cuba against all U.S. attempts to intervene in Cuban affairs.

We reject the travel advisory issued by the U.S. State Department. We came to Cuba and will stay for the duration of the Brigade to fulfill our mission to support the Cuban Revolution, bring the truth about Cuba back to the U.S., and encourage others to visit.

In the past year, over 500,000 people have traveled from the United States to Cuba. They have seen the real Cuba, not the misrepresentations portrayed in the imperialist media.

We demand that the Washington end the blockade, get out of Guantánmo now and normalize relations with Cuba. These demands are overwhelmingly supported by the people of the United States.

The U.S. government’s abandonment of the people of Puerto Rico after the hurricanes stands in stark contrast with the preparation, evacuation and vigorous recovery organized by revolutionary Cuba. The U.S. government has rejected Cuban assistance to Puerto Rico, their sister island. Cuba offered to send 41 doctors and brigades of electricians, but has received no reply from the U.S. government. We know that the Cuban Revolution will not sacrifice its principles or its sovereignty during this most recent attempt at U.S. intervention or future ones.

¡Hasta la victoria siempre!

CLARENCE THOMAS’S LIFE OF STRUGGLE

Clarence Thomas is a third generation longshore worker, who has 31 years of service in the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 10 in San Francisco.

Clarence’s activism started in the late 1960s as a member of the Black Student Union at San Francisco State College and as a member of the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California. During his college days at San Francisco State, he was a part of the leadership of the longest student strike in U.S. history which resulted in the establishment of the first Black Studies Department and School of Ethnic Studies in the country and both still exists today.

He has served as an officer in his Local and has been a part of many historical economic and social justice struggles for the working class and the oppressed.

Clarence organized and lead such courageous and rank-in-file actions such as the Million Worker March Movement in 2004, calling for workers to break away from the Democratic and Republican parties and organize independently mobilizing and organizing in their own name; in 2008 shutting down all 29 West Coast ports on May Day to oppose wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; in 2010 shutting down five Bay Area ports action for Justice for Oscar Grant and Jail for Killer Cops; in 2011 on the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. shut down Bay Area ports for 24 hours as a Day of Solidarity with Wisconsin Workers; also in 2011 shutting down docks on December 12th in solidarity with West Coast Occupy Wall Street; in 2014, port shut-down solidarity action for Palestine; May Day 2015 port shut down action for Resisting Police Terror; and on May Day 2016, rally and port shut in Support of Black Lives Matter and the Minimum Wage Demand of $15 per hour.

Although he is retired from the longshore industry, he is not retired from the struggle!

ESPAÑOL ABAJO

Dolores Huerta is the most important activist in American history that you may have never heard of. An equal partner alongside Cesar Chavez in organizing the first farm workers unions (eventually becoming the UFW), Huerta fought ceaselessly to protect the rights of jornaleros, mujeres, and all whom those in power would seek to exploit. Even at the age of 87, she remains the stridently feminist, uncompromising firebrand. Combining archival footage with unprecedented intimate access, Dolores finally gives this titan of American activism the tribute she so richly deserves.
