First shipment of humanitarian aid from Venezuela arrives to Cuba

HAVANA.– Venezuela became the first country to send humanitarian aid to Cuba this Tuesday, September 12, following the impact of Hurricane Irma on the island over 72 hours.

The aircraft 2803, model Y-8, of the Venezuelan Air Force arrived at Havana’s José Martí International Airport with a message of solidarity on behalf of the people of Venezuela and President Nicolás Maduro, in addition to a cargo of 7.3 tons of aid for the victims of Irma.

Mattresses, water and canned food formed part of the first shipment of aid from Venezuela, while further donations from the sister nation are being prepared for shipment, Prensa Latina reported.

As the aircraft arrived, Venezuelan Minister for Women and Gender Equality, Blanca Eekhout, assured that her country is ready to assist Cuba in anyway it can, as an expression of infinite gratitude and solidarity.

Cuba – she stressed – was always with Venezuela in the most difficult times and that is why we are permanently committed to its people and Revolution.

We have also worked in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the rest of the Caribbean, impacted by Irma’s powerful winds and heavy rain, she added.

The Venezuelan minister emphasized that these efforts follow the legacy of The Liberator Simón Bolívar, and the late Comandante Hugo Chávez, upheld by President Nicolás Maduro.

We know that Cuba will be victorious because of its level of organization and preparation, especially because it is a united people; but they can also count on the solidarity and love of Venezuela, Eekhout concluded.

Meanwhile, Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Roberto López, highlighted the gesture of solidarity from Venezuela, and its support at this difficult time.

This is the first shipment of aid we have received and we reiterate our gratitude. This reaffirms the bonds of brotherhood between the two nations, López stressed.
Many countries around the world, especially in Latin America, were attentive to the impact of Hurricane Irma on the island and have expressed their solidarity.

Days of Action Against The Cuban Blockade September 11-16, 2017

http://theinternationalcommittee.org/

Cubans will “always thank our American friends for all they do” to try to ease the impact of the U.S. blockade on Cuban health, says Leima Martinez of Cuba’s Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP). But real change won’t happen, she suggested to an audience of students and health care professionals at American University in Washington Tuesday, until the U.S. Congress finally ends its failed blockade of Cuba.

Pointing to statistics presented to the United Nations that showed the blockade cost the Cuban health care system $82.3 million in 2014-15 alone, Martinez said that, “if the blockade ended tomorrow, we would have that $82 million to invest in health care for our people.”

The well-attended session at American University — which also featured Dr. Jesus Reno, the head of pediatric oncology at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiology in Havana, and Dr. Abraham Vela, a California-based graduate of the famed Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana — was one of two on Tuesday featuring our Cuban guests whjo came to Washington as part of this week’s Days of Action Against the Blockade. Later, Dr. Reno, Ms. Martinez and two other U.S.-graduates of ELAM — Dr. Mercedes Charles of Virginia and Dr. David Lavendar of Missouri — spoke at another event at the University of Maryland.

Meanwhile, teams of International Committee activists fanned out on Capitol Hill Tuesday advocating in nine Senate and House offices for action to end the blockade. They will continue their work on Wednesday and Thursday with more than 40 meetings scheduled.

The Days of Action continues for the rest of the week with advocacy and other activities, including a public event Thursday evening featuring Cuba’s Ambassador to the United States, José Ramon Cabañas as keynote speaker.

National Days of Solidarity with #DefendDurham

By LeiLani Dowell posted on September 13, 2017

http://www.workers.org/

An uplifting Bull City Block Party was held on Sept. 9 to celebrate Durham’s continued resistance and tenacity against white supremacy, including the toppling of a Confederate statue on Aug. 14. Some 200 people showed up for the event, held in the parking lot of the Hayti Community Center in the heart of Durham’s Black community.

WWP organizer and 2016 vice-presidential candidate Lamont Lilly emphasized “Activism is going to the people. Activism is feeding the people and meeting the people where they are.”

Participants in the “block party for activism” were treated to delicious Southern food, music, speeches and bouncy houses for the children. The event was co-sponsored by WWP, the Durham Solidarity Center, the Youth Organizing Institute, Duke Grad Student Union, Fight for $15 and Alerta Migratoria.

The block party was just one event in the Sept. 11-17 National Days of Action called by a broad national coalition in solidarity with the Durham Freedom Fighters. The week continued with the court appearance of arrested Fighters on Sept. 12.

Milwaukee, September 17: Public Vigil in Support of Dreamers and Victims of Police Violence

Hosted by Black Lives Matter to Wisconsin UUs

1342 N Astor, First Unitarian Society Of Milwaukee, 12:15 – 12:45 P.M.

Recent weeks have seen the president act to end DACA; Milwaukee Police gravely injure a young African-American man in what appears to be a case of “fit the description”, and kill a legally blind African American would-be peacekeeper on his front steps and in the presence of his 13-year-old son and his 83-year-old father; and continued words and actions nationwide against our Muslim and Jewish neighbors.

Please stand with us against white supremacy in all its hateful forms.

Our vigil will be silent. Our bodies and our signs will speak our outrage and our sadness. And our resolve.

This Vigil is being co-sponsored by First Unitarian’s Black Lives Matter Team and Immigration Issues Action Group.

Milwaukee, September 15, 2017: Stand with ATU 998: $15 and a Union for Streetcar Transit Workers

Hosted by ATU Local 998

City Hall Room 303, 200 E Wells Street, Milwaukee, 9-11 A.M.

Stand with ATU Local 998 to fight for $15 and a union for streetcar transit worker and to fight for our future.

Join us in demanding that City officials require $15 and a union of the streetcar operations contractor, Transdev.

The City of Milwaukee announced it has contracted for private operations and maintenance of the new streetcar system. They signed a contract with Transdev instead of the Milwaukee County Transit System that already runs our buses and employs workers represented by ATU Local 998.

ATU 998 is fighting for a $15 wage floor and union rights for the new streetcar operations and maintenance workers. We are fighting for our future, protecting against privatization of MCTS and protecting the contract standards we have won, through strikes and otherwise. ATU 998 will fight for transit workers, whether running buses or streetcars, and we will do whatever it takes to win.

Join us in calling on City officials to require Transdev to sign an agreement for $15 and a union. If it’s good for the Bucks, it’s good for the streetcar. On Friday, the City streetcar committee meets and we’re showing up to demonstrate we are ready to fight and to make our demand. Stand with transit workers, support the union, and fight for our future.
