Jobs With Justice Statement

This weekend’s events call upon each of us to speak out boldly against white supremacy, neo-Nazism, and white nationalism in all forms. Racism, anti-Semitism, hatred, and fear should have no home in America.

Jobs With Justice condemns hatred, bigotry, and violence against our friends and neighbors. We grieve for the lives lost and pray for those critically injured as a result of the domestic terrorism committed in Charlottesville. We pour out our hearts to everyone in the Charlottesville community, and to those around the country who are traumatized by witnessing such barbaric, racist acts.

When tearing down symbols of hate sparks such vitriolic backlash, the work to fully dismantle racism from our society is far from over. We recognize the progress achieved as communities finally remove the white supremacist monuments that stain our country. Our nation needs more healing, unifying, and transformation to live up to our values of respect, equality, diversity, and freedom.

Jobs With Justice is committed to advancing racial justice, as doing so is fundamental to working people uniting to create better workplaces and a more inclusive economy. Standing shoulder to shoulder together makes us stronger as a people and as a nation.

This moment calls upon our network of coalitions and supporters to combat violent and exclusionary systems of white nationalism and white supremacy smoldering in our communities and institutions. It is more important now than ever before.

More info to come, but INDY staff writer Sarah Willets reports that leftist demonstrators have pulled down the Confederate Monument on Main Street in downtown Durham in protest of the events in Charlottesville. Under a state law passed in 2015, local governments are not allowed to remove Confederate monuments without permission from the legislature. The demonstrators apparently didn’t care.

“Charlottesville and racist monuments across the country are the result of centuries of white supremacy,” Alissa Ellis, a member of Workers World Party Durham branch that was a participant in the Charlottesville protests, told the Herald Sun. Her group mobilized members on Facebook to attend the Durham event.

A brave antifascist has been murdered standing up to violent hate in Charlottesville Virginia. A coalition of far-right groups invaded Charlottesville for a “Unite the Right” rally to oppose the removal of a confederate monument and the re-naming of Lee Park to Emancipation Park. A huge counter-demonstration gathered to oppose these White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and other right-wing hate groups and their message of hate and violence. We are horrified to see that a Fascist drove their car full speed into the mass demonstration of Antifascists, killing at least one and seriously injuring a dozen others.

The General Defense Committee of the IWW is holding a meeting to discuss next steps for defending our communities and responding to the rising tide of hate. Join us at the Martin Luther King Library for a breif know your rights training followed by some planning.

It recently came to light that on May 23, the U.S. expelled two Cuban diplomats from the U.S., in response to bizarre and unfounded charges that Cuba had allegedly attacked U.S. diplomats in Havana with an unknown “acoustic weapon” and damaged their hearing. We demand that the Trump administration cease its threats against Cuba. We fully support the Government of Cuba’s condemnation of this unwarranted U.S. accusation. The statement follows:

Caracas (GPA) – In the wake of the the historic vote to form a Constituent Assembly, there has been a steady stream of complaints from the Venezuelan opposition to President Nicolas Maduro. Maduro dismisses most of the concerns and attacks by the opposition, and he has good reason to.

The US corporate media has spent months championing the cause of everyone they know in Venezuela, even the slightest of publicly known figures, as long as they are willing to go on record and slander the government of Nicolas Maduro. These quotes are religiously parroted by every major US media outlet that only wants readers, viewers and listeners to hear one side of the ongoing fight in Venezuela.
