Stop U.S. Government Attacks on the People’s Right to Protest

From Greenpeace:

Huge and growing marches and demonstrations have shown lawmakers that our resistance to Trump’s anti-climate, anti-justice agenda is gaining momentum. And behind the scenes, conservatives are taking action to silence us all legislatively.

That’s why I’m asking you to sign our petition immediately. Tell your state’s leaders to stand for your constitutional rights.

In 19 states so far, laws have been proposed by conservative lawmakers that would crack down on peaceful protests, infringing on our right to free speech, undermining democracy, and putting human lives at risk. Peaceful assembly is protected under the Constitution—and these assaults on our First Amendment rights are nothing but scare tactics.

We at Greenpeace cannot fight for climate action, or clean air and water, or the health of our communities, without organizing, mobilizing and speaking out as a unified movement. None of us can let governments and corporations silence us. We must stop these unconstitutional measures now, and your state leaders need to hear from you. These bills are a threat to our democracy, a threat to our ability to enact change, and even a threat to human lives.

Please – refuse to be silent. Sign the petition to defend free speech and the right to peaceful protest. Thank you!

For a green and peaceful future,
Rebecca Gerber
RESIST team, Greenpeace USA

P.S. Greenpeace’s power lies in our direct action, in people joining together and resisting. Trump and his corporate enablers would love nothing more than to deal a crippling blow to our entire movement. But we won’t be silenced — and we know you won’t either. Please stand strong with us, as you always have, and fight back. Sign the petition today.

Mumia is innocent and was framed! 35 in prison is 35 years too long!

On April 24, Mumia Abu-Jamal’s birthday, there will be a court hearing on his PCRA (Post-Conviction Relief Act) petition in Pennsylvania courts. This is an action to overturn all of the PA Supreme Court decisions from 1995-2008 that denied him freedom despite the evidence that the police and prosecution manufactured the “proof” of his guilt and suppressed evidence of his innocence.

This latest legal challenge is based on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Williams case, which ruled that an appellate judge cannot participate in a case in which he formerly had a personal role in a significant prosecutorial decision. Ronald Castille was the District Attorney responsible for opposing Mumia’s 1989 appeal of his trial conviction and death sentence. Then, after being elected to PA Supreme Court in 1994, Castille ruled against Mumia in every appeal brought before him critical of the actions of his former DA’s office. Castille ran for election to the PA Supreme Court bragging that 45 men (including Abu-Jamal) were sentenced to death by his DA’s office and that he was financed by and had been honored by the FOP as “Man of the Year.”

We call for Mumia’s immediate release from prison!

After the court proceedings, participate in a gathering at Arch Street UM Church, 55 N Broad St: RESISTANCE MATTERS – Legal & Medical Justice for Mumia and all Prisoners.

https://wrfglaborforum.org/2017/04/17/wrfg-labor-forum-program-on-monday-april-17/

With just two weeks before May Day, The Labor Forum speaks with organizers in Atlanta, Roanoke, Va and the Triangle cities of Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill, NC to hear about their plans and why May day is important.

Beginning at 4:15, Ga Latino Alliance for Human Rights leader, Adelina Nichols will detail the actions scheduled for Atlanta on Monday, May 1.
Then Shelea Haskins from Roanoke and Manzoor Cheema from the Triangle will call in and describe what will be happening in their cities.

The struggle for the 8 hour day in the US is the impetus for what is now an internationally recognized day dedicated to worker solidarity in the fight for social and economic justice. The current vicious attacks on workers’ rights are fueling greater participation in May Day in the US and strengthening class solidarity.

The Labor Forum airs every Monday from 4-5pm on WRFG 89.3FM. For additional information, http://www.wrfglaborforum.org

YES Students and MTEA Members Collaborate to Win Sanctuary District in Milwaukee

http://mtea.weac.org/2017/04/17/yes-students-and-mtea-members-collaborate-to-win-sanctuary-district-in-milwaukee/

On March 30, the students of Youth Empowered in the Struggle in Milwaukee, along with a group of MTEA educators, successfully organized and won a Sanctuary District resolution for Milwaukee Public Schools. The resolution was passed unanimously by the Milwaukee school board and proved a major organizing victory. But our work is far from over. Students and educators are now employing similar tactics in Sheboygan and Racine, Wisconsin where they hope to win the same policy for students there.

How did YES students, allied with MTEA members, win in Milwaukee? YES students and supportive MTEA educators formed an Education Task Force Committee to help spur success. The committee met weekly to collaborate and develop petition language as well as a plan to win support. MTEA leadership also met with select school board members to develop resolution language that protected students and engaged district staff in the policy. The Education Task Force of students and MTEA members backed that work up by composing the petition below to help build support for the resolution and to mobilize other students and educators to action…. http://mtea.weac.org/2017/04/17/yes-students-and-mtea-members-collaborate-to-win-sanctuary-district-in-milwaukee/

April 21: Jax5 Call In Day – Melissa Nelson, Drop the charges on the Jax5!

Hosted by Justice for the Jax5

The #Jax5 are tentatively scheduled to have their first day in court on May 1st. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is taking a lot of heat in the media for their wrongdoing, and now it’s time to start getting those charges dropped. We need to call State Attorney Melissa Nelson at 904-255-2500 and demand that she drop the charges on the #Jax5!

The #Jax5 are five demonstrators who were brutalized and arrested on bogus charges on April 7th during a peace demo calling for peace with Syria in downtown Jacksonville, FL.

Our calls have been having a tremendous effect and we need to ramp it up – invite your friends to this event and share it nationally. Groups from all over the United States have been calling to support the #Jax5.

Call Melissa Nelson at 904-255-2500 and say “Drop the charges on the #Jax5 now!” Make sure to mention any organizations that you belong to.

Jobs With Justice: Tell Congress “Hands Off Overtime Pay!”

From Jobs With Justice:

Congressional leaders are at it again, trying to pull a fast one on working families. Backed by corporations that want to see us work more for less, they’re unleashing a bill to allow companies to stop paying overtime.

Help us protect overtime pay for millions of people working now and in the future. Write to your representative TODAY and tell them to reject this scheme.

The deceptively-named “Working Families Flexibility Act” would allow corporations to offer comp time to people who work more than 40 hours a week, instead of paying overtime. What’s more, there’s no guarantee that individuals could use their earned comp time when they need time off for emergencies, caring for loved ones, or any other reason.

They can’t fool us with this bad bargain.

We can’t afford to be overworked and underpaid. Everyone who works for a living needs to be paid for the hours they work. Write your representative NOW to oppose the gutting of overtime pay.

Americans are ready for solutions from our elected leaders so more of us can earn a decent living and provide for our families. Instead, some members of Congress want to see how much they can rip us off to help their CEO buddies take even more profits. These are the same politicians and lobbyists who attempted to slash Medicaid, give a tax cut to healthcare industry billionaires, and who are gunning to repeal the long-awaited increase in overtime pay.

Enough is enough. Don’t let Big Business continue to rob us. Write your representative TODAY and tell them to reject the sham “Working Families Flexibility Act.”

Thanks for all that you do.
