Young Gifted and Black, Madison: February 2017 Events

From Young Gifted and Black:

As President Trump plans xenophobic actions such as a border wall and a de facto Muslim ban, the time is now more than ever to stand united in grassroots solidarity to protect the rights of people of all races, religions, genders, and sexualities. That’s why YGB is focusing on Three Key Areas: Understanding Black Needs, Building Collective Analysis, and Advocacy. You can learn more and get involved at ygbcoalition.org. We will also be staying engaged by showing up and showing out to events that you’ll want to be a part of: https://www.facebook.com/fergusontomadison/

Detroit March 25-26, 2017: Midwest WWP Fight For National Liberation and Socialism Conference

cropped-wwp-midwest-socialist-conf-march-2017-profile-pic.png

Join Workers World Party in Detroit, Michigan along with other Midwest WWP branches for a fightback conference on the resistance against racism and capitalism, and the struggle for socialism where we’ll discuss:

*Ending the police war on Black & Brown people & defending the Black Lives Matter movement

*Stopping the raids & deportations & disarming ICE & the police

*Defending queer and trans people, fighting for LGBTQ liberation and women’s liberation now

*Fighting imperialism from Syria to Africa, for a free Palestine, and building international solidarity

*Abolishing capitalism and fighting for revolutionary socialism

*The struggle in the Midwest against powerful reactionary state apparatuses and a direct ruling class offensive

*The economic, political, and social war waged against Detroit, a former stronghold of workers power and black liberation

*Combating the emboldened right wing and rising fascist movement

Racist police repression, raids and deportations, and the attacks on working class and oppressed people cannot be ended, once and for all, until the decaying capitalist system, which is becoming more and more desperately dependent on state repression, is ended. Capitalism must be replaced with a system that is based on meeting human needs, not exploitation to make profits: socialism.

These and other pressing struggles of the day — along with the experiences, observations, and questions of those in attendance — will be the basis of the conference.

Michigan prisoners speak out against ‘epic’ abuse and retaliation

http://sfbayview.com/2017/02/michigan-prisoners-speak-out-against-epic-abuse-and-retaliation/

On Sept. 9, 2016, prisoners participated in the largest prisoner work stoppage in the history of the country. Prisoners in at least four facilities in Michigan joined in the work stoppage, including Kinross Correctional Facility near Kincheloe in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The next morning, after retaliatory actions from staff, Kinross prisoners held a peaceful demonstration in the yard. Since then, hundreds have faced harsh, unjust retaliation. Michigan Abolition and Prisoner Solidarity (MAPS) formed to help amplify the voices of prisoners brave enough to speak out publicly against the abuses of the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). Harold “HH” Gonzales was a spokesperson for the prisoners at the demonstration at Kinross and wrote the following account.
