Madison, January 31: Take Back our Campus: Resist White Supremacy

Right after President Trump’s inauguration, a student group (Madison American Freedom Party) has surfaced on campus claiming themselves to be the voice of the Alt-Right at UW. For those unfamiliar with the alt-right, it is a racist ideological group that believes in white supremacy, among other extreme nationalist positions.

The organization claims “to provide support and general direction, for UW-Madison students aspiring to understand, organize and lobby in defense against college practices, policies and climate which are hostile to students and faculty of European ethnic background and traditional values.”

This thinly veiled white nationalism and blatant racism has no place on the diverse UW-Madison campus or in the city as a whole.

WE WILL NOT ALLOW HATE TO THRIVE AT UW-MADISON AS IT HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO THRIVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY BECAUSE THE ELECTION HAS MADE IT ACCEPTABLE. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

We need to make this campus a safe space for ALL, including people of color, sexual assault survivors, Muslims, Jews, LGBTQIA+ people, people with low income, people with disabilities, undocumented immigrants, refugees, and anyone else that is systematically targeted along identity lines.

We are gathering at Library Mall at 5pm and will march up Bascom to deliver a list of demands to Chancellor Blank and Dean of Students Lori Berquam in order to initiate response to many of the troubling events that have occurred since the election.

WI AFL-CIO: Assembly Districts to be Redrawn!

From the WI AFL-CIO:

http://www.wisaflcio.org/

Great news! Federal judges have just ordered Gov. Walker and the legislature to redraw Assembly districts for the state of Wisconsin. A panel of three judges previously ruled that the 2011 maps drawn by Walker & Republicans were unconstitutional because their hyper-partisan nature trampled on the rights of voters to have a fair say in our democracy. Now, the courts have ordered that new, less partisan Assembly maps be drawn. Redrawing Assembly maps will also impact Senate maps as there are 3 Assembly district in each Senate district.

The new maps must be drawn by November 1, 2017 and be in place for the November 2018 elections.

We’ve seen Scott Walker and his Republican allies attempt every dirty trick in the book to silence voters, consolidate power and retain control. We’ve seen hyper partisan districts (now ruled unconstitutional), early voting locations and hours restricted (partly restored by the court), photo ID laws that disenfranchise voters, campaign finance rules changed so dark money can flow in and even our government watchdog ethics board dismantled.

CALL TO ACTION:  Right now, with the new court decision, the momentum is shifting! We need qualified candidates to step up and run for office. Candidates who share our working-class values and are ready to fight special interests in order to raise wages, restore collective bargaining rights and fight for safe work places. We need union members and union supporters to consider a run for office.

Our democracy works best when all people have an equal say in who represents them. Scott Walker and Republicans are starting to be held accountable for rigging the rules and stacking the deck against the people. Let’s continue to hold them accountable to working families.

In Solidarity,

Phil Neuenfeldt, President

Detroit, March 25-26, 2017: Fightback Conference, Resistance Against Racism and Capitalism: the Struggle for SOCIALISM

Midwest WWP Fight For National Liberation and Socialism Conference

Join Workers World Party in Detroit, Michigan along with other Midwest WWP branches for a fightback conference on the resistance against racism and capitalism, and the struggle for socialism where we’ll discuss:

*Ending the police war on Black & Brown people & defending the Black Lives Matter movement

*Stopping the raids & deportations & disarming ICE & the police

*Defending queer and trans people, fighting for LGBTQ liberation  and women’s rights now

*Fighting imperialism from Syria to Africa, for a free Palestine, and building international solidarity

*Abolishing capitalism and fighting for revolutionary socialism

*The struggle in the Midwest against powerful reactionary state apparatuses and a direct ruling class offensive

*The economic, political, and social war waged against Detroit, a former stronghold of workers’ power and black liberation

*Combating the emboldened right wing and rising fascist movement

*Fight For Standing Rock and other indigenous struggles

Racist police repression, raids and deportations, and the attacks on working class and oppressed people cannot be ended, once and for all, until the decaying capitalist system, which is becoming more and more desperately dependent on state repression, is ended. Capitalism must be replaced with a system that is based on meeting human needs, not exploitation to make profits: socialism.

These and other pressing struggles of the day — along with the experiences, observations, and questions of those in attendance — will be the basis of the conference.

Executive Orders: Trump Presidency Escalates Attacks on Millions in the United States

http://www.globalresearch.ca/

After just seven days of the administration of President Donald Trump, a host of measures have been enacted which threaten a myriad of constituencies throughout the country and internationally.

Abayomi Azikiwe: “…The ascendancy of Trump provides an important opportunity for the building of a broad-based united front of democratic forces including African Americans, Latin Americans, Native peoples, immigrants, women, LGBTQ communities, environmentalists and other working class constituencies. However, this alliance which represents the majority of the population within the U.S. must be based on sound political principles and not opportunism. The rights and demands of the oppressed must by upheld including foreign policy questions such as the dismantling of the military industrial complex, the liberation of Palestine, and the elimination of racist violence and institutionalized discrimination against the people of color communities.

This coalition of genuine popular forces should be organized outside the framework of the Democratic Party which represents the same ruling class elements as the Trumpist Republicans and their Wall Street and Pentagon supporters.” http://bit.ly/2k0UiNT

2017 Represents the Centenary of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia

One of many fundamental lessons to be found within scientific socialist thought as developed by Karl Marx and Frederich Engels are the polemics with other tendencies within the revolutionary movements over the right of oppressed nations to self-determniation, up to the point of independence. Marx maintained this view in regard to the political situations involving Poland and Ireland during the late 19th century.

V.I. Lenin, who along with the Bolshevik Party in the November (October) 1917 Revolution, applied the correct Marxist viewpoint in not only carrying out the first socialist seizure of state power but also the creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in

  1. We will examine Lenin’s views on these questions from an article written in 1914, three years prior to the triump of the Russian Revolution.

Title: “The Utopian Karl Marx and the Practical Rosa Luxemburg”

Later in 1966, at the Tricontinental Congress held in Havana, Cuba, Amilcar Cabral, the co-founder of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), delivered an historic address on the need for revolutionary theory within the national liberation movements sweeping the continent and the world.

These reading materials will be supplied at the class.

Please come out and join us in these very important discussions which can serve to guide our organizing work during this period.

SOLIDARITY: Stand with CWA Strikers Against Hedge Fund Billionaires

From the Communication Workers of America:
On November 2, working people at Momentive Performance Materials in Waterford, NY put their jobs on the line by going on strike. They’re standing up against Wall Street greed for each other, the community, and all working people who want to earn a good living in this country.

This strike is bigger than Waterford. Every single day, Wall Street speculators, hedge fund managers and private equity firms sacrifice our communities for the benefit of the wealthy few. Momentive workers are standing strong to stop them.

Will you stand with these brave workers by signing our petition? We’re asking Stephen Schwarzman, the CEO of the investment group that owns a large chunk of Momentive, to put working people before Wall Street greed. Click here to add your name.

Since private equity took over Momentive from GE in 2006, wages have been slashed up to 50%, pensions have been frozen, and jobs have been outsourced. Now, Momentive wants to slash healthcare for active employees, and eliminate completely healthcare and life insurance for retirees – many of whom are dealing with illnesses related to their exposure to deadly chemicals at the plant.

Steve Schwarzman’s Blackstone Group has driven down workers’ standard of living over the past decade.  And Schwarzman isn’t just any Wall Street billionaire – he chairs President-Elect Donald Trump’s new “Strategic and Policy Forum,” which is intended to help improve economic growth and create good jobs.

A delegation of Momentive workers will be delivering the petition signatures to Schwarzman. Tell Steve Schwarzman if he really cares about preserving and creating good jobs in places like Waterford, NY he should stop trying to make a buck at the expense of good jobs and the future of our communities. Add your name at actionnetwork.org/petitions/i-stand-with-momentive-workers-on-strike.

In Unity,
Beth
