UNAC had a busy year in 2016, but 2017 promises to be the most important year of our coalition’s existence. We need your help.

A message from the United National Antiwar Coalition, https://www.unacpeace.org/

In 2016, UNAC sent members on fact-finding and solidarity delegations to Syria and the Philippines.  We spoke at a protest meeting and rally in Warsaw, Poland, where NATO was holding a summit, and built anti-NATO rallies in several cities in the US.  We helped found the Hands off Syria Coalition, which is making great strides towards building an opposition to the US intervention in that country. We co-sponsored and helped build rallies for Aafia Siddiqui, the Pakistani political prisoner being held in solitary confinement and sentenced to 86 years for crimes she did not commit.

We supported campaigns to free all Muslim political prisoners falsely arrested by the US government.  We protested at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions and built rallies to help interject the issue of US wars abroad into the elections.  We built an organization and web site to support human rights and freedom of speech in Odessa, Ukraine, sent a delegation to a rally in Odessa to commemorate the killing of pro-democratic rights protesters, and sponsored tours of people from Odessa in the US. We attended the 20th anniversary of the Southern Human Rights Organizer’s Conference and other meetings and conferences of UNAC affiliated and supported groups.

But 2017 promises to be a watershed year for UNAC and the movement as a whole.  The presidential election campaigns did not address the issues of US sponsored wars, which continue in several counties.  This is because both candidates are pro-war.  The election of Donald Trump threatens to break the agreements that the US negotiated with Iran, and pro-war people are being proposed for key positions.  Additionally, threats to immigrants, to Muslims, and to many social programs threaten to accelerate the wars at home.  People have been coming together to protest the Trump agenda, and these demonstrations are broadly attended by people from the climate change movement, the anti-war movement, the Black Lives Matter movement, the civil liberties, labor and other movements fighting the attacks from the government, which, under Trump, will likely accelerate.

People will not wait four years to try and turn this around through new elections.  We can expect to see mass movements developing as people take to the streets to struggle against wars and to protect gains won through generations of struggle.  UNAC will play a central role in these struggles.  We will hold our next convention in Richmond, Virginia in late April, 2017, around the time of the end of the first 100 days of the Trump administration.  This conference will be held in an area that is new for us and is designed to reach out to the growing movement and to new UNAC affiliates throughout the South.

We need your help! UNAC is one of the very few national organizations in the US that has consistently opposed U.S. aggression at home and abroad.  Our coalition includes some of the most active anti-war groups across the country, organizing major marches, conferences and trips abroad to support peace and justice.  Because we do not rely on any political parties, NGOs, or outside organization, we are asking you to donate to support UNAC’s work. Because we are a totally self-supporting organization, we can analyze current events and take positions on issues without restrictions placed on us. Our agenda is to oppose US imperialism at all turns, not just when it is politically convenient. That is why we need your help.

Rasmea retrial set for May 16, 2017; Support the defense now!

Rasmea Defense Committee statement, #Justice4Rasmea

For Immediate Release – December 21, 2016

Rasmea retrial set for May 16, 2017; Support the defense now!

Dec. 21 Rasmea Odeh and her defense attorney Michael Deutsch called into Judge Gershwin Drain’s courtroom in Detroit, where the judge and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tukel were in attendance.  The parties all agreed on May 16, 2017, as the new starting date for Rasmea’s retrial.

The defense committee will continue to send regular updates regarding any pre-trial hearings or other appearances that Rasmea must make between now and the retrial, as well as requests to participate in regular defense organizing and activities.

In addition, we urge supporters to continue to call U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade at 313-226-9100, or tweet @USAO_MIE, and demand that she stop wasting taxpayer money, that she stop persecuting a woman who has given so much to U.S. society, and that she #DropTheChargesNow against Rasmea.

Lastly, and in the spirit of the season, please help us win #Justice4Rasmea by making your end-of-year donation to the defense fund!  We thank you all for your continued support!

International Action Center – Solidarity Center: 25 Years of Activism!

http://iacenter.org/

December, 2016

Dear friends,

Hundreds of thousands of protesters shouted “We say NO!”  “We resist!”  “Not My President!” across the country for the week following reactionary demagogue and billionaire Donald Trump’s win. People of all nationalities, led by youth, denounced his program of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, sexism, and homophobia.

At this critical time, only the collective voice of millions of people, mobilizing and acting in unity, can defend those threatened and targeted by racist, extremist forces.

International Action Center members were out in the streets, too. The Solidarity Center, where the IAC is based in New York, and which is the base of many other grassroots organizations and committees, provides the kind of organizing that will be needed in the dangerous period ahead.

The IAC is joining the mobilization of a massive resistance to the president-elect’s agenda on Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C., during his Inauguration. The Solidarity Center is a hub for information and coordination; the IAC is arranging transportation to get people to the Counter-Inaugural in the tens of thousands. See the exciting new website  J20Resist.org.

Let the Holiday Campaign Begin for Rev. Edward Pinkney!

By Polly Hughes

“Therefore, if you can, along with any card or letter, please include 3-4 sheets of lined paper that he can use for his writings.”  (address also in post below this)

Recently, Reverend Edward Pinkney was abruptly transferred out of West Shoreline Corrections Facility in Muskegon Heights to Brooks/Fremont Correctional Facility in Muskegon Heights. He was driven around in a van for about 30 minutes before ending up at Brooks/Fremont, which is basically across the street from West Shoreline! Both facilities are at 2500 S. Sheridan!

What is behind this latest move? We only can surmise that it is a typical tactic used by departments of corrections to cause confusion, isolate prisoners, keep families and friends from inmates; in other words, it’s a “show them who’s boss” mentality that costs taxpayers unnecessarily and puts stress and hardships on not just the inmates, but on their loved ones.

Rev. Pinkney reports that Brooks/Fremont is worse than the Marquette facility—a fact that is difficult to comprehend. We all know the conditions at Marquette: walls covered with black mold, unsanitary conditions, rotten and inedible food, hostile prison officials, a warden with an iron fist, poor medical treatment, and much more.

When Dorothy Pinkney and I visited the Reverend on Saturday, November 19, he was in good spirits, talkative, joyful to have visitors, and he was hungry. At West Shoreline, visitors can bring in quarters to purchase a variety of vending machine foods for the inmate. Microwaves are provided to heat up sandwiches. He ate plentifully and talked about how much he had learned while being incarcerated for the past two years. The Reverend is always just as interested in the lives of his visitors, in their opinions and activities as he is in talking about the deplorable conditions he has endured over the past two years. He is genuinely appreciative of others, and every time I speak with him, it is a lesson in self-sacrifice, devotion to others, and compassion.

Rev. Pinkney was looking forward to the next weekend’s visit on Friday, November 25, the day after Thanksgiving. The plan was for a visit from Dorothy along with their daughter and grandson. On the 21st he was moved, and the fear was that his visits and his phone calls would be interrupted, perhaps suspended for a time. However, he did receive the family visit on the 21st and his phone calls resumed. He is so grateful for family members, friends, and supporters.

Rev. Pinkney has repeatedly expressed his gratitude for all the birthday cards he received—about 250 from around the world! He is looking forward to receiving your holiday cards in celebration of Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, etc. He told us that the cards and letters he receives give him great joy, hope, and a real connection with others, and the communication lets him know so many individuals are aware of the injustice so many are suffering.

Now that he is at Brooks/Fremont, his wife will have to order more pre-packaged food for him (through the prison system) that is edible (rather than eating the rotten, worm-infested food that is served daily). There are vending machines available at Brooks/Fremont, but they contain only snack foods; no sandwiches or any healthy fare is offered, and there are no microwaves for inmates’ use.

He is determined to give the prison system as little funds as possible, but he must continue to speak out, and one means is by writing blogs and articles. Therefore, if you can, along with any card or letter, please include 3-4 sheets of lined paper that he can use for his writings. If we all write to him and send paper to him every month, he would be kept busy with his reading, research and writings until his 2.5 years are up in June 2017—a day we are all looking forward to celebrating with him. His freedom, his life, his family have been sacrificed for far too long.

Cuba: Where Real Human Rights are the Foundation of Society

http://www.nnoc.info/cuba-where-real-human-rights-are-the-foundation-of-society/

Published by the National Network on Cuba, http://www.nnoc.info/

“…The full resources of Cuba are used to develop each individual Cuban to their fullest potential. Universal health care, free education through university, the right to employment, to housing — to dignity is not only guaranteed but implemented.

Over $4 billion was wasted this year on the presidential campaign in the U.S. Just imagine for a moment what that money could have been spent on in terms of social improvements. Meanwhile the people of Cuba enjoy free and fair elections untainted by financial influence. Every Cuban is registered to vote on their 16th birthday. Every vote is counted under the honest and watchful eyes of children. In addition to representation, the Cuban people are directly consulted about the direction of their society through community, union, women’s, agricultural, youth and other organizations. Their views are heeded. Transgender individuals have been elected to represent their area.

So when we hear about Human Rights Day on Saturday, December 10, remember the fundamental human rights enjoyed in Cuba where the 1959 Revolution converted military barracks into schools. One of them is the Latin American School of Medicine where youth from underserved communities around the world — including some from the U.S. — learn to be doctors for free, then go home to serve the people.

Yes, that is real human rights.

Detroit, March 25-26: Midwest WWP Fight For National Liberation and Socialism Conference

Join Workers World Party in Detroit, Michigan, Workers World Party – Michigan along with other Midwest WWP branches for a fightback conference on the resistance against racism and capitalism, and the struggle for socialism where we’ll discuss

*Ending the police war on Black & Brown people & defending the Black Lives Matter movement

*Stopping the raids & deportations & disarming ICE & the police

*Defending queer and trans people, fighting for LGBTQ liberation now

*Fighting imperialism from Syria to Africa, for a free Palestine, and building international solidarity

*Abolishing capitalism and fighting for revolutionary socialism

*The struggle in the Midwest against powerful reactionary state apparatuses and a direct ruling class offensive

*The economic, political, and social war waged against Detroit, a former stronghold of workers power and black liberation

*Combating the emboldened right wing and rising fascist movement

Racist police repression, raids and deportations, and the attacks on working class and oppressed people cannot be ended, once and for all, until the decaying capitalist system, which is becoming more and more desperately dependent on state repression, is ended. Capitalism must be replaced with a system that is based on meeting human needs, not exploitation to make profits: socialism.

These and other pressing struggles of the day — along with the experiences, observations, and questions of those in attendance — will be the basis of the conference.

NYC: Fight Back Against White Supremacy

Last night 4 of our comrades were majorly physically injured by 4 trump supporters. Our comrades had just left a closing party of Decolonize This Place and were happily chanting when they were confronted by 4 trump supporters who took assaulted them and beat them up and left them majorly injured to the point where 3 of our comrades had to go to the hospital.

We will not tolerate this behavior of white supremacy and hate. We are here to say this stops now and we fight back! Please come and stand up !
