Schools and Communities United Co-Chair Ingrid Walker-Henry called the issue of whether or not to provide more funding a “no-brainer,” saying, “When we’re talking about our children, when we’re talking about our future … it really shouldn’t be a contentious issue.”
Schroeder urged GOP legislators to recognize the progress MPS has made and to fix “funding flaws” to provide public school districts with more resources. Fair Funding for Our Future, a funding plan DPI first proposed in 2011, would provide more money for students who are economically disadvantaged and simplify the funding formula. The plan would cost about $570 million more than the state budgeted in 2015; Schroeder said wealthy individuals and corporations should foot the bill.
“We talk about being a nation of people who care about each other,” Walker-Henry said, “This is our future. This is the future of our city; this is the future of our state. Do you care enough to invest in it?”

NoDAPL is a resistance born of the spirituality, love and fierce determination of Native people to shut down the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).*
DAPL endangers fresh water for the Standing Rock Sioux and 8 million people living downstream, and also impacts many sites that are sacred to indigenous nations. A historic convergence of more than 200 Indigenous nations at Standing Rock will not allow this to happen.
Standing Rock Support Committee (Milwaukee) is hosting a benefit show to raise funds for the Legal Defense Fund & HonorTheEarth for the Water Protectors.
A detailed list of performers will be announced soon. The show will feature poets, artists, singers, performers, Indigenous speakers — who will address & update on the situation at Standing Rock, and plethora of #NoDapl buttons, t-shirts, art-work etc that people can buy. So, come on out, and bring friends!

Local 26 strikers have supported and spoken at rallies to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day, in support of Standing Rock and against pipeline spills and water poisoning. In turn, Native students at Harvard have spoken at strike rallies.
