Madison: Support Community Control Over Police

https://www.razoo.com/us/story/Mou2of

UPDATE: On Thursday evening, July 21, 11 people were arrested for interrupting traffic and occupying the so-called Police ‘Union’ as an interracial coalition called for community control over police. Please support these brave folks by donating to help pay for bail and to cover legal expenses!

UPDATE: Community members locked together to block the intersection of John Nolen Drive and the Beltline Highway to call for an end to business as usual. Support this action by donating to support legal expenses! DONATE HERE: https://www.razoo.com/us/story/Mou2of

On Thursday afternoon, community members locked together to occupy the Police Union, calling for accountability. This is part of the National Day of Action which was called for by The Movement For Black Lives and SURJ (Showing Up For Racial Justice) to raise awareness of police violence against Black people. Please donate to help cover legal expenses for these brave folks!

The recent murders of Philando Castille and Alton Sterling highlight once again the utter disregard for Black life by police departments across the country.  With the vast racial disparities in arrests of African Americans, the murder of Tony Robinson, and the recent beating of Genele Laird we know that Madison is no exception.

Alix Shabazz, of Freedom Inc said,  “If we had community control of the police, the perpetrators of these murders and beatings would be held accountable to the fullest extent, as these actions would be considered completely unacceptable.”

Emily Blessing of Groundwork said  “We cannot continue to allow business as usual, because business as usual is murder.”

  • We demand that the police stop killing Black people.
  • We demand Community Control Over the Police so that people most impacted by police violence set the policies, practices, and priorities of the police.  So that we can hire and fire and bring true accountability to those who are supposed to protect and serve.
  • We demand the City of Madison invest in community not cops, that the budget of the Madison Police Department be cut by $6 million and that money redirected into needed community based resources, such as culturally relevant crisis mental wellness and conflict mediation.

Philly, July 26:SHUT DOWN the DNC! Build the Movement to Smash Capitalism & Racism

SHUT DOWN the DNC! Build the Movement to Smash Capitalism & Racism

Progressives, socialists, feminists, Black Lives Matter, environmentalists, and anti-war activists: Let’s build a united front to take on the racist, capitalist Democratic party!

The Presidential elections that take place every four years bring about only cosmetic changes: different faces running the government while the same billionaire masters still call all the shots. Whether it’s Clinton or Trump, Democrat or Republican, police will still terrorize us and low wages will keep us in or near poverty. That is, unless we fight back!

WE’VE HAD ENOUGH! No more fake “democracy” in our city!
NOT while racist cops run wild.
NOT while our public schools go criminally underfunded.
NOT while our people suffer some of the highest poverty levels in the country.

We demand self-government, not super rich capitalists. Free Mumia and all political prisoners! Reparations now! Women’s and LGBTQ liberation now! Abolish capitalism and oppression NOW! It’ll only happen if we FIGHT FOR IT!

Philly, July 26: Black DNC Resistance March against Police Terrorism & State Repression

Black DNC Resistance March against Police Terrorism & State Repression

The Philadelphia Coalition for REAL Justice presents:
Black DNC Resistance March against the Capitalist & Racist Government: We Have Nothing To Lose But Our Chains!!

The Democratic Party has consistently betrayed their promises to the Black community and the 2016 presidential election is not going to be any different. The presidential election is the largest electoral process in the country, and the Black community can no longer watch a few control the lives of many. Black communities have been underfunded for centuries. Black communities are under siege with militarized police terrorism, assault and murder; public schools are underfunded and do not properly educate our children; economic development means black displacement through gentrification; prison privatization and the school to prison pipeline; raising the minimum wage to a living standard; the right to proper access of quality healthcare, food, shelter and the essential means of life; protection and inclusion of the LGBTQ community, as well, the releasing of all political prisoners and the right to self-determination and control of our communities. This can only come from the unification of our voices, understanding the intersectional connections, education and support of one another and not the democratic process.

Philadelphia is a historically Black city, as well as the birth of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Both documents have kept the Black community subjugated. The American political system was organized and created by white men who supported and upheld the enslavement of Black people. These documents continue to function under the order of white supremacy and neo-liberal reformists politics. Black liberation cannot occur in a reformist society. White supremacy must be abolished and Black liberation must become a priority.

The DNC is set for July 25th -28th. There are multiple groups and thousands of people coming into the city; some to support, protest, organize, disrupt, get arrested, etc. We cannot allow this political moment to be whitewashed like the Occupy Movement. We must capitalize off of this moment with one goal in mind; and that is to resist the capitalist and racist power structures that allow white supremacy and capitalist oppression to flourish. It’s time to build power, PEOPLE POWER!

Madison, July 21: Rally at Police ‘Union’

As part of a national day of action on July 21, we will rally at the police union to demand accountability and community control of the police. We call for community control of the police to put an end to violence against communities of color.

Sponsored by Freedom, Inc., Young Gifted and Black Coalition, Groundwork, No New Jail, First Unitarian Society Equity Ministry Team, Racial Justice Tipping Point, Families for Justice Operation Welcome Home, U.N.I.T.Y. Inc. Now!, and the International Socialist Organization.

Madison: BLACK FREEDOM NOW

YGB Ferguson To Madison

#‎Shutitdown‬! Disrupting one of the biggest ongoing Madison events where thousands of predominately white people come Wednesdays during the summer. We can’t wait for ‪#‎CommunityControlOverPolice‬ and for ‪#‎BlackFreedomNOW‬!

Here is a statement from the coalition of groups that put this weeks actions together including: Groundwork, Freedom Inc, YGB, No New Jail, ISO, UNITY, and others.

We are here to invite you to join us in the Movement for Black Lives, and to call on the city and county for community control of police.

We are here because our conscience calls us to interrupt business as usual. When business as usual in our city and our country is murder, none of us can justify inaction. We all must ask ourselves, What are we doing to take a stand?

This interruption is an inconvenience, yes, but your inconvenience is negligible compared to the fear, violence, and death that our Black neighbors experience every day.

We are here to bring your attention to the fact that Black people in our community are being arrested at 11 times the rate of white people.

We are here to call your attention to the fact that 50% of young African-American men in our community are under control of the department of corrections.

That our jails are disproportionately full of Black people and other people of color locked up for trying to survive poverty.

We are here to voice our noncompliance with business as usual in our city, and to urge you to join us in taking action.

We want an end to police officers murdering our neighbors and facing no accountability.

We ask you, who was being protected and who was being served when a mental health officer brutally beat an 18-year-old Black woman, Genele Laird, last month in the name of keeping the peace? Peace for whom? We will not allow this to happen in our names.

We want Black community control over the police, so that people most impacted by police violence set the policies, practices, and priorities of the police. So that we can hire and fire and bring true accountability to those who are supposed to protect and serve.

We demand the City of Madison invest in community not cops, that $6 million of the Madison Police Department budget dollars be redirected into needed community based resources, such as culturally relevant mental wellness and conflict mediation.

We want Black Freedom Now!

We want Community Control of the Police!
