Madison, May 5: What is the “Criminal Justice System?”

What is the “Criminal Justice System?”
What are your RIGHTS?

We will discuss the various branches that encompass the criminal justice system: Police, Prosecutors and Prison.

Then we will examine what goes into the decision when a prosecutor charges a particular crime after receiving it from the police. There are many opportunities to learn more about this process.

We will work through and exercise on whether given the facts, should a person be charged or not.

If so, what sentence would you recommend?

We will also spend time on “Know YOUR Rights”.

WI AFL-CIO ALERT: Public Hearing Scheduled for Prevailing Wage

http://wisaflcio.typepad.com/wisconsin-state-afl-cio-blog/

Family-supporting jobs with good wages are under attack in Wisconsin.  Republicans have introduced a bill to repeal Wisconsin’s long-standing Prevailing Wage laws.  After publicly saying they didn’t have the votes to repeal Wisconsin’s Prevailing Wage and would instead slip changes into the budget – the Senate Committee on Labor and Government Reform has scheduled a public hearing for Prevailing Wage this Tuesday, May 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in room 411 South.

We need you there!  Come testify in support of prevailing wage.

Get the facts on Wisconsin’s prevailing wage law.  Click here for a flyer on the issue.

Sign the petition to support prevailing wage laws in Wisconsin.

Prevailing wage is the wage set for workers on publicly-funded construction projects.   Prevailing wage serves as a wage floor and ensures a level playing field for workers and Wisconsin contractors alike.

Prevailing wage works for Wisconsin; it makes sure construction projects are top-quality by using highly-skilled, well-trained workers to complete projects on time and on budget.   Prevailing wage creates value through good wages for workers, stability for contractors and safe buildings for citizens.  Protecting prevailing wage laws are essential for safe communities and strong families.

Then, make your voice heard; testify at the public hearing Tuesday, May 5, at the Capitol in room 411 South.

Meddling with Wisconsin’s prevailing wage is bad news for Wisconsinites.  Wisconsin workers are the backbone of the economy.  We all deserve safe jobs with family-supporting wages.

Madison: Support Young Gifted and Black Coalition Ending State Violence

End State Violence on Black Bodies

The Young Gifted and Black coalition stands against the many forms of state violence, police killings, mass incarceration, poverty, and more. We stand for justice of all black lives lost to the hands of the state. We stand for community and self-determination. We will not stop until we are free.

The state is committing unrivaled levels of violence against the brown and black communities in the greater Madison, WI area. Dane County and Madison are ranked the worst place to live if you are black. According to Race to Equity(1) we have an 11-1 arrest disparity of black people vs white in Madison, we make up close to 50% of the jail population and we only make up 6% of the population. About 75% of our black children are living in poverty. Institutionalized racism and white supremacy is destroying Madison’s black community through educational inequality, wealth inequality, through the criminalization of poverty, and through an unjust justice system.

On Friday March 6 2015, Madison Police Department officer Matt Kenny murdered 19 year old Tony Robinson, before his life was able to truly start. Now, the Young Gifted and Black coalition is putting a petition forward to call upon the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Organization of American States commission on Human Rights, to launch a dual track investigation. The first being an independent investigation into the death of Tony Robinson at the hands of Madison, WI police officer Matt Kenny. And the second being an independent investigation into the persistent and systemic racial disparities and inequities in the greater Madison area (Dane County, Wisconsin), with particular focus on poverty rates and the ways in which the police are used as an occupying force in black communities in order to maintain those inequities. This petition can be found at ygbcoalition.org . This nation must reckon its past and present with the lies we continually tell ourselves.

Young Gifted and Black is pushing Dane County to Build The People Not The Jail. We are in a fight to stop the proposed plan to renovate our current jail. Instead we are calling upon Dane County to invest in mental health services and black community led resources. We know that when we build people over jails we improve our communities. We must stop the funneling of money into mass incarceration, into the New Jim crow immediately. We must stop the robbery of black bodies and invest into those the state has continually oppressed. We know when we support and build those the most oppressed all other oppression starts to lift.

Be a part of the movement to end the many forms of state violence.

10% of the donations will go directly to Tony Robinson’s family.

“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty win. We must love and protect one another, we have nothing to lose but our chains.

Muslims for Social Justice Statement on #Baltimore

STATEMENT: http://tinyurl.com/lca66f8

“What we’re witnessing in #Baltimore is called in Arabic “intifada.” A mass popular uprising: throwing stones, resistance against an occupying force, people collectively saying we’re fed up and putting their lives on the line because they know their lives and the lives of their loved ones are at stake
Literally intifada means a shaking off. Shaking off all the collected trauma, collected through our ancestors to this moment. Shaking off grief and rage. Shaking off the boot of the oppressor on our backs.
Intifada Hata Al Nasr, intifada until victory, because we have a duty to win
What we’re a part of is a global uprising. The struggle for black liberation is a struggle for the liberation of all people in the world. The Palestinian intifada, anti-imperial struggles worldwide, depend on the liberation of Black folks in this country….”
