Milwaukee, March 5: Right Now: Fire and Police Commission Meeting

EVENT: http://tinyurl.com/m8hw99l

https://www.facebook.com/justicefordontre

Calling All Concerned Community Members:

We have been to the Fire and Police Commission Meetings over and over, and time after time. We have repeatedly went in, shared our public comment and left. For the past 7 months, we’ve adhered to their rules and regulations about how to operate in their space. We as a community (very reasonably) asked them to set the date of the Christopher Manney Appeal hearing, to give the people of the community enough time to make the necessary adjustments in our schedules to be there.

And for 3 months, they pushed us to the side, set the date, then moved it, or put the issue onto another body of the city government. Well now we say “NO MORE.” We will not stand for that. We are holding them accountable, not only to their duties as public servants, but also to our communities who have repeatedly show’d up only to be repeatedly slapped in the face. We are coming again to tell them to set the date. We are coming again to tell them hear our complaints, and respond to them. We are coming again to tell them that they better do something about this city or we will. Set the Date, Hear Us, Respond,Change the city. RIGHT NOW.

Please come out let your presence be felt and heard.

If weather permits, we will gather at Red Arrow Park at 5pm to do our justice circle, then head over to City Hall (if not we will just meet in the atrium of City Hall). The meeting will begin promptly at 5:30pm in room 301-b. Be aware that the meeting is subject to change location. We will keep you updated. Please try to arrive as early as you can. Space is limited.

Chicago Teachers Union Supports United Steelworkers Strike

http://www.ctunet.com/

The Chicago Teachers Union stands in solidarity our brothers and sisters in the United Steelworkers who are on strike to secure safe and healthy working conditions in the country’s oil refineries.

As Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner attacks Illinois unions and worker compensation laws that keep workers safe, Texas, where many oil refinery accidents occur, has the highest rate of workplace deaths of any state in the country and a much lower rate of unionization than Illinois.

The United Steelworkers should be commended at their courageous efforts to stand up to corporate greed that has pushed for efficiency over safety and profits over people.

It is a known fact that the states with the higher rates of unionization have better standards of living for families, higher investments in education and more worker protections to keep people safe on the job.

It is incumbent upon Illinois political and business leaders to reject the race to the bottom promoted by the anti-union attacks of Governor Rauner and instead recognize the rights of workers and the importance of their unions to mitigate negative externalities in the workplace and beyond.

Additionally, Illinois political leaders can address the widening gulf between rich and poor in the state and the nation by actively promoting unionization, halting the attack on worker pensions and demanding higher taxes for the wealthy, an approach that has drastically improved state budgets for the people of Minnesota and California.

The Steelworkers are not just fighting for themselves, they are fighting for the 99% and we thank them for it. We hope Illinois will follow their lead.

SDS Statement in Solidarity with Anti-Right to Work Protests in Wisconsin

STATEMENT: http://tinyurl.com/k4ufnk6

Students for a Democratic Society stands with the Progressive Students of Milwaukee in solidarity with the working people of Wisconsin against union-busting “right to work” legislation proposed by the state senate and supported by Governor Scott Walker.

Gov. Walker has consistently worked to dismantle public institutions, like the UW system, and to combat the power of the working class by attacking unions. Four years ago, Gov. Walker pushed through state tax cuts for the wealthy, which created a debt crisis for Wisconsin, while simultaneously proposing to solve the crisis by attacking public sector unions. An attack on the public sector which continues to this day with Gov. Walker’s proposed $300 million cuts to the University of Wisconsin system, a 13 percent cut to the higher education budget. In 2011, tens of thousands of working class people in Wisconsin stood up, occupied the Capitol building, and demanded a recall election to replace Gov. Walker. And he is at it again.

Gov. Walker is now pushing for “Right to Work” legislation, which extends his attacks on the public sector to the whole working class. “Right to work” seeks to undermine the power of organized labor to fight for better wages, benefits and conditions for the working people of Wisconsin by prohibiting unions from collecting mandatory dues from employees. It seeks to bankrupt organized labor across Wisconsin, just as Gov. Walker is seeking to bankrupt and further privatize higher education with his proposed $300 million cut to UW.

PSM member and UW-Milwaukee graduate student, Andrew Carlyle states, “The people who benefit from attacks on unions are the same people who benefit from attacks on public education. When public services are liquidated and the proceeds are given away in the form of tax cuts, it’s the capitalist class that benefits. When unions are crushed and workers lose their voice, it’s the capitalist class that benefits. As students and as working people, we need to unite to fight back against the class war that is being waged against us.”

Students for a Democratic Society stands with the Progressive Students of Milwaukee in calling for an alliance between students and workers to stand together against attacks on unions and education. With this alliance, SDS and PSM believe we can stop these attacks and win victories for organized labor in Wisconsin and for students across the state.

MONDAY, MARCH 2 — TELL WALSH: DROP THE ANTI-UNION FRAME-UP CHARGES ON UNION LEADER STEVE KIRSCHBAUM

The mayor’s number is 617-635-4500
Monday, March 2 is a National Call-in day to Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and District Attorney Daniel Conley.

This is a fight to defend the union leaders of USW Local 8751 — a fight to defend a local that has always espoused political and social unionism — and a fight against racism and education cuts in Boston!

Mayor Walsh has made it clear: while he hails from the labor movement, his policies have served the union busters, the budget cutters — the one percent, whether it’s closing MORE schools, kicking 7th graders off of school buses, dissing the Black Lives Matter movement or firing a city worker for exercising her First Amendment right to protest in support of Black Lives Matter.

SIGN ON to the Community/Labor Statement!

NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY MONDAY 3/2 – Call Boston Mayor Martin Walsh at 617-635-4500 fax 517-635-2851 email mayor@boston.gov. Tell him the charges must be dropped and the four fired union leaders rehired, middle school students kept on school buses and no schools closed, safety and education for the students, concern for the parents and justice for the drivers!

Also call Suffolk County DA Daniel Conley, 617-619-4000 fax 617-619-4210. Tell him to drop the frame-up, anti-union felony charges against USW 8751 union leader Steve Kirschbaum. Then connect to the call-in day event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/1401278336846856/ and add a comment describing the response you get.
