Picture the Homeless shot this video at an August 5 New York City protest of the Food Is A Right campaign, which is organizing with food stamp recipients, volunteers and other groups throughout the 5 boroughs to build a grassroots movement to stop cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

In April 2011 the House passed a bill cutting $127 billion, 20% from SNAP the food stamp program, in the next ten years. The bill converts SNAP from an entitlement program into a capped block grant controlled by individual states.
With the recession turning into a prolonged depression for millions in the U.S., unemployment rising, and the cost of food, rent and other necessities rising, SNAP is the only barrier against hunger and even starvation.
1.7 million New Yorkers receive food stamps, the majority families with children. 3 million New Yorkers use SNAP and other nutrition services such as W.I.C., food pantries and banks.
