———-
Happy New Year Supporters of Public Education!
As we write this email, our Wisconsin state legislators are beginning to work on a new two-year state budget and we want to invite you to an “Art Build for Public Education” the first weekend in February to create materials to use during the upcoming state budget battle.
Click here to register for the Art Build for Public Education
We remember the last two-year state budget that in addition to slashing public school funding also included a midnight state Takeover of the Milwaukee Public Schools. Committed advocates like you that pushed back against the legislature taking away community control of our public schools and eventually thwarted the 2015 legislation. We know this legislative cycle the privatizers will come back even harder and we continue to build a movement against any state takeovers of our public schools. We are committed to fighting for expansion of the public Community Schools model that has a proven track record of strong performance and currently serves 6 million students.
The “Art Build for Public Education” is taking place Friday, February 3 through Sunday, February 5 in Milwaukee. A committee of MPS art educators and other community artists has developed images and slogans to be used for the weekend art build. The build will require lots of volunteers of every skill level to construct signs, banners, posters, etc. in anticipation of this long state budget fight.

Public education advocates will have many opportunities in the coming months to fight for greater funding for our children’s schools and against state takeovers that hand our democratically controlled school boards over to private third party operators. The materials created from this art build will support this fight across the state.
Please consider signing up for spots during the weekend to help here.

We pledge to create a resistance movement that makes Trump unable to govern our oppression; unable to deceive the people, to make the people accept his reign of hatred. We refuse to give hatred a chance to govern, a chance to roll back civil and human rights, a chance to deport millions of people, a chance to create camps and registries for Muslims, a chance to expand the prison industrial complex, a chance to expand its drone wars, or a chance to turn back the gains won by our struggles.
We pledge resistance to this renewed attack on our communities. As we resist, we will create new governing institutions, new economic relationships, and new ways of being human. What we will not do is sanction and/or normalize “overt” white supremacy.
Let’s start now. Let’s make the so-called inauguration day a day to resist a day to be ungovernable and plan for a new future and new way.
On January 20, self-organize a day of action. If possible don’t ask for permits assert your right to free speech and assembly, let it be a day of mass demonstrations, civil disobedience, and direct action and strikes.
In the evening of January 20 at 6pm join us for a nationwide town-hall on what comes next in these times.
Right under our noses yesterday morning at 1:30AM, Republicans took a huge step closer towards dismantling the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by approving a budget resolution that could cut out important provisions that would affect the more than 20 million Americans who are currently insured under the ACA.
If the ACA is ultimately repealed, 1 in 15 AAPIs will lose access to healthcare coverage — 1.2 million of us. 1
Now it could be as soon as today that the House could approve this budget. We cannot let this happen — your representatives need to hear from you. Even if your Representatives support the ACA, they need to be encouraged to take a bold stand against this life-threatening policy shift.
Join us by taking action right now. Call your representatives to #SaveACA.
With a 51 to 48 vote, the Senate approved a budget that can be used to get them closer to repealing the Affordable Care Act by a process called “budget reconciliation.” Through this process, the Republican controlled Senate can pass a bill based on a simple majority and cannot be filibustered by Democrats.2
And some more bad news: Republicans are divided in how to replace the plan. Just yesterday, the President-Elect mentioned that he would replace ACA on the “same day…[even in the] same hour” it is repealed. Rigghttttt. Five Republican Senators have already expressed concern that this is not even possible.
Without a replacement plan, what will happen to the 20 million Americans currently insured under ACA plans? As it stands, the outlook is not so good.
Friday, January 20, 5 p.m., Riverwalk at Wabash and E. Wacker Drive, Chicago
Protest the Inauguration of Donald Trump
Say No to Racism
Say No to the Trump Agenda
On the first day of the new administration, join thousands of Chicagoans to protest the Trump Agenda.
We’ll declare our determination to resist all attacks that Trump is bringing: on immigrants, Black people, Arabs and Muslims, workers, women, Native Americans, and the environment.
We’ll defend the 99% against the Trump cabinet of billionaires, generals, and racists that represent the 1%.
We’ll stand up along with massive protests that are occurring at the inauguration in Washington, DC, and in other cities across the country.
We’ll stand with college and high school students that are planning walkouts.
We’ll pledge to continue our resistance to the attacks coming from the likes of Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and from the Chicago Police Department (CPD).
We’ll take a stand because we believe that the people have the power to stop the coming attacks if we unite in solidarity and resist from day one.
We refuse to be intimidated or afraid. We are prepared to fight back.

The petition to your members of Congress says the following:
I’m calling on you to oppose repeal of the Affordable Care Act—that will strip coverage from more than 30 million Americans—without a plan for replacement, so millions of families aren’t left without health care. http://www.aflcio.org/

Help us to fight Donald Trump on his Inauguration Day!
Your donations will go to mobilize thousands of people from cities across the United States as we march on the White House during Trump’s first day as President.
#J20Resist seeks to mobilize people to streets of Washington DC in order to give Trump a simple message, “No Trump, No KKK, No fascist USA!” We will stand united against Trump’s attacks on women, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, migrants, people of color, unions, and every issue that impacts us.
Currently, we have buses and carpools from over 15 major cities coming to DC for January 20th. We are assembling just blocks from the Capitol, where we will take the streets and march to the White House. This will be only the beginning of the fightback against Trump.
We are also planning local actions across the United States so that everyone can show their resistance to Trump. Interested in learning more? Check out our website: J20Resist.org and our Facebook page .
