TURN the GUNS AROUND
Mutinies, Soldier Revolts and Revolutions
$19.95 New York: World View Forum 2017
324 pages. 29 photos, 4 maps.
Draftees and enlistees — eighteen-year-olds from the South Bronx, factory workers from Buffalo, miners’ sons from Kentucky, unemployed youth from Watts — hate the military and the Vietnam War. They throw a wrench into the Pentagon’s war machine, becoming leaders of the anti-war movement and organizing a union in the con-script military to battle war, racism and their officers.
In three other wars — the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 that sparked the Paris Commune; World War I, which sowed revolutions in Germany and Russia; African liberation wars of the 1960s that incited a captains’ revolt in Portugal — ordinary soldiers turn their guns around to make revolution.
Weaving together letters from servicemen and servicewomen, inter-views with GI war resisters and first-hand narratives, memoir and historical research, author John Catalinotto — as participant and historian — highlights the relation between rank-and-file soldier resistance and the struggle for state power.
From the first napalm bomb dropped, Catalinotto hated the U.S. war against Vietnam. By 1967 he was organizing rank-and-file servicemen to resist the war. For the last 50 years he pondered that experience and its lessons for humanity. Now he wants to share this history with all who want to fight injustice.

If schools in the United States really wanted to impart historical truth, Catalinotto’s Turn The Guns Around would be required reading. He tells the true story of this epoch. Few participants know more about the massive GI rebellion against the Vietnam War, the anti-war veterans’ movement or the history of soldier revolts from the Paris Commune to the Portuguese coup.

Turn The Guns Around really brings it all back: the struggle, the solidarity, the cruelty of the stockade Brass. I’m extremely proud to have played a small role during that period. I regret nothing.’

‘Every once in a while a book comes along that lifts us high by reminding us that people struggling together can accomplish momentous things. I consider myself fortunate to have been part of the GI anti-war movement, and a founding member of the ASU; we are all fortunate to have this book.’
U.S. Army, Sept. 7, 1965 to Sept. 6, 1968
⇒ SARA FLOUNDERS
‘The radical shift in consciousness fifty years ago within the U.S. military has invaluable lessons as a new period of resistance unfolds. In Turn the Guns Around, rank-and-file GIs, who suddenly emerged as leaders of a movement, describe their determination to risk all, refuse orders and sabotage the military machine. By rooting them in past resistance, this “How to” manual arms the people’s movements of today to combat new wars.’
Co-Director of International Action Center, Author of War Without Victory
⇒SP4 GREG LAXER
‘Catalinotto’s book digs up historical precedents for troop revolts contributing to the ending of imperialist wars. That was certainly our aim through the actions of the American Serviceman’s Union. The best people I met in the army were my fellow stockade inmates!’
U.S. Army, prisoner of conscience, Forts Devins, Dix and Riley, 1968-70
⇒FRED GOLDSTEIN
‘In the present period of reaction it is difficult to imagine the undoing of the powerful capitalist state. Catalinotto reaches back in history to vividly demonstrate how social and economic crises can and will lead to the disintegration of the capitalist military. He shows that the forces of social revolution lie embedded in the very structure of imperialism and it’s insatiable drive for conquest.’

STOP THE WAR ON SYRIA!
STOP THREATS OF WAR AGAINST IRAN!
OPPOSE THE TRAVEL BAN!
STOP THE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MUSLIMS!
Since the election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States, the US policy in the Middle East has taken an even more dangerous turn. While President Trump says he will not pursue a policy of regime change in Syria, he has surrounded himself with Islamophobes and militarists. Thanks to the new US administration, Islamophobia is on the rise throughout the Western world.
Over the last 16 years since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, rising Islamophobia has come hand-in-hand with escalating U.S.-led wars and occupations in the Middle East and North Africa. The Trump administration is now attempting to impose an inhumane travel and refugee ban on seven Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — all targets of U.S. military attack or sanctions by the current and previous administrations.
The Pentagon is considering sending more U.S. ground forces to Syria. To justify this military escalation, the demonization of Syrian Government has been intensified though a new wave of misleading propaganda. The most recent salvo is a sensational yet unfounded report from Amnesty International, which has been broadcast by media outlets around the world.
Iran has been made the target of new threats as well. False claims about an Iranian attack on US ships in the Persian Gulf, combined with threats of new economic sanctions against Iran, which can easily jeopardize the Iran Nuclear Deal, are setting the stage for a new round of confrontation with Iran. Mass killing of innocent civilians in Yemen by the criminal Saudi government, with full support from the United States, is being intensified. To add fuel to the fire, the Trump administration has talked about moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a move that will certainly lead to another dangerous conflagration in the Middle East.
All these point to the fact that we are moving toward another, more disastrous, catastrophe in the Middle East. We call on all peace loving people throughout the world to unite and take action during the International Days of Action (March 11-19) against U.S. intervention in Syria and throughout the Middle East, against Islamophobia, and against the refugee Travel Ban.
Here are some suggested actions that you can take during the International Days of Action:
We ask you to send a report of your planned activities for the International Days of Action (March 11-19) to Hands Off Syria Coalition so that we can publicize them on our web site: hosc@HandsOffSyriaCoalition.net
We also encourage you to form your own local chapter of Hands Off Syria Coalition. For more information about forming local chapters of HOSC please go to our web site: http://HandsOffSyriaCoalition.net and click on “Forming An HOSC Chapter” link on top of the page.

Sept. 7 march in NYC from Union Square to Times Square.
Our program and route details will be released VERY SOON. Please share and invite women to this Facebook invite.
This will serve as a the beginning and meeting point for women in Milwaukee and the surrounding areas to come together, build, equip, connect, and educate Black communities with resources and opportunities that will help provide a sustainable environment free from oppressive systems.
Not since the 1960s have U.S. citizens suffered from such blatant attacks on democracy: sweeping suppression of voting rights and women’s rights with a heightened pipeline to prison and disenfranchisement of black and brown people.
Our nation’s children are counting on us. We cannot afford an existence in silence. No more life in the shadows. There is no time like the present time! We must stand up and resist!
From Milwaukee to Anchorage to Rhode Island and Chicago to Texas we will stand in solidarity!
UBLAC, Uplifting Black Liberation and Community is a coalition led by Black Women, Queer, and Trans* folx working towards Black liberation with people of African heritage in Milwaukee to give the tools necessary to resist oppression.
