Oshkosh, July 31, 2020: Justice for Isaiah Tucker! We Demand Police Accountability!

Justice for Isaiah Tucker! We Demand Police Accountability!

Join us on the anniversary of Isaiah Tucker’s murder to demand the firing of Oshkosh Police Department’s Officer Aaron Achterberg and those involved in denying Isaiah medical care after he was shot. In the early morning of July 31st, 2017 OPD was responding to a domestic complaint after an argument and Isaiah fled and backed out of the driveway with the car him and his girlfriend often shared only to be fired at 11 times, 2 of them fatally wounding Isaiah, who was found crashed at another scene close by and had succumbed to his wounds.

Isaiah’s blood soaked items were returned to his mother after Oshkosh Police Department lied in their report that Isaiah had used his car to try and run Officer Achterberg over this forcing him to “fear for his life” and fire multiple shots when this was later proven to be false by the dash cam footage. By the time the footage had been shown there was little community interest because, like the thousands of victims of police brutality, his past criminal record was used to tarnish his name and justify the blatant disregard for safety and dignity of Isaiah’s and the other innocent people in surrounding homes. This happens too often and Isaiah deserves justice!

We demand that officers be held accountable and not by their superiors! We demand that the community have a direct say in and control ofwho we allow to keep us safe, how they’re trained, if they need to be fired, and what happens when they take a life like Isaiah’s (or others who need help NOT harm) We demand that Isaiah’s case be reopened so we can hold his killers accountable! #Justice4Isaiah

July 28, 2020 Virtual Forum: ‘It’s Time to Hold Governor Evers Accountable!’

When he was running for Governor, then candidate-Evers made a lot of promises to #CLOSEmsdf partner organizations. He vowed to cut Wisconsin’s prison population in half. He promised to depopulate and close Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility as soon as possible.

In his first budget, Governor Evers actually proposed measures to increase the capacity of Wisconsin’s prisons. In his nearly two years as Governor, the state’s prison population has barely changed.

While some changes require a cooperative legislature, there are many changes the Governor can make with or without the State Senate or State Assembly. Twenty percent of people in Wisconsin’s prisons are there because of conviction-less sentencing or what some people refer to as crimeless revocations. This process is controlled by the Department of Corrections and the Department of Administration, who report directly to the Governor. In addition, the Governor has very broad powers to commute sentences.

Nine candidates for state senate seats in Madison will be addressing this topic as well as several other crucial issues at the MOSES/EXPO State Senate Candidate Forum on Tuesday, July 28th at 6 pm. Several directly impacted leaders will be joining this important conversation. Investing in black and brown communities and depopulating and closing prisons will be among the issues addressed at this forum.

This will be a virtual forum. Please join us for this crucial discussion.

The Wasp Network

See “The Wasp Network,” now on Netflix, a star-studded spy thriller dramatizing much of the Cuban 5 case, which has spurred calls by anti-Cuba groups and politicians to silence the film. “In Florida they have threatened to burn cinemas, if the film is ever shown in theaters, and signatures are collected to force Netflix to withdraw the film.” Click here to read about the controversy surrounding this thriller.  Read The Independent’s review here. And here is another article about the importance of this film.

Scholars Strategy Network hires union-busters to fight staff union

Management at the pro-democracy organization the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN) has hired the prominent union-busting law firm Ogletree Deakins to represent them against their staff’s union, reports the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU). This comes after SSN Director Theda Skocpol refused to voluntarily recognize the SSN Union, forcing SSN staff to file for a union election with the Trump National Labor Relations Board. SSN staff are unionizing with NPEU. “It’s absolutely disgusting that an organization dedicated to ‘strengthening democracy’ would go to such great lengths to suppress its staff’s union. If management valued a democratic workplace, they would recognize their staff’s union immediately, instead of seeking counsel from a notoriously anti-worker law firm,” said NPEU President Kayla Blado. “We call on SSN to fire Ogletree Deakins and immediately recognize their staff’s union.” Read more here. https://npeu.org/
