524 S Layton, Milwaukee, WI – 6:30 P.M.
The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement puts political and economic pressure on Israel to comply with international law and end the oppression of Palestinians. Inspired by tactics utilized in the resistance against South African apartheid, Palestinian grassroots and civil society organizations formally launched the campaign in 2005 out of the occupied Palestinian territories.
As global solidarity with Palestine spreads and the world watches Israel continue to bomb, displace, and attack Palestinians, BDS is uplifted as the best tool we have to stand up against Israel’s settler colonialist violence. Recent BDS action has successfully blocked Israeli ZIM cargo ships from docking in California and Washington, and pushed Ben & Jerry’s to end sales of their ice cream in certain illegal Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory. With the increased visibility of the BDS movement comes a Zionist counter-campaign attempting to discredit the Palestinian cause, claiming that any opposition to the state of Israel represents an anti-Semitic attack on all Jewish People.
We invite you to join us for a teach-in about the BDS movement, its history, and viability as a tactic in the struggle to free Palestine from settler colonialism. While it may seem difficult to imagine how we can assist in the movement for Palestinian liberation from Milwaukee, this event is geared toward showing the importance of an all-encompassing BDS movement that stretches around the world.Panelists will speak on:
The history of the BDS movement
Its success in South Africa and applicability in Palestine
Contemporary BDS organizing in the United States
The need for individual and collective action to make BDS a success
Debunking the myth that opposing Zionism is anti-Semitic
Highlighting the work done by Palestinians in and outside Palestine to resist Israeli apartheid
The event will take place at the bandshell of Mitchell Park (524 S Layton Blvd Milwaukee, WI 53215) on Thursday 8/12 at 6:30pm.Masks are highly recommended and will be provided for those who don’t have one.
