_____

Background

Three conservative candidates that have a variety of ties to interests with records of attacking public education and that are anti-union, are running for the Manitowoc School Board. These candidates have also stated they are opposed to historical truth being taught in public schools, safety protocols and equity, diversity and inclusion policies and programs. For months, they have engaged in what many sources say are threatening behavior including at school board meetings forcing meetings to go online.

With who they’re connected to, various sources say if the conservative candidates were elected to the Manitowoc School Board decades of progress could be destroyed and charter/voucher schools (privatization) implemented. The candidates (and their backers) hope to get a base on the School Board in Manitowoc and use this to attack public education throughout northeastern Wisconsin and beyond.

When we at WI BOPM published our factual article on March 22, 2022 detailing the truth about the conservative candidates and their ties to entities such as the Bradley Foundation, we (and our Co-Founder Bryan G Pfeifer) were attacked with a campaign statement by Tony Vlastecia (a Manitowoc school board candidate that participated in the January 6, 2021 violent insurrection and that home schools and/or places his children in private schools).

Actually, Vlastecia attacked our friends as well because he listed other individuals and organizations by name that we’ve worked with over the years such as the People’s Power Summit and is now posting photos of us and our friends on his social media with inflammatory comments. (Note: WI BOPM formed in the summer of 2011 and since then has published what we view as critical information for public discussion and have supported in numerous ways hundreds of organizations in Wisconsin and beyond including students, community, unions, faith based groups and others. The blog https://wibailoutpeople.org/ is a public record.)

The WI BOPM article: https://wibailoutpeople.org/2022/03/22/manitowoc-wisconsin-right-wing-school-board-candidates-have-ties-to-privatizers-union-busters-bigots-and-torturers/

In 2017, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD), publishers of SourceWatch, launched a series of articles on the Milwaukee-based Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, exposing the inner-workings of one of America’s largest right-wing foundations. 56,000 previously undisclosed documents laid bare the Bradley Foundation’s highly politicized agenda. CMD detailed Bradley’s efforts to map and measure right wing infrastructure nationwide, including by dismantling and defunding unions to impact state elections; bankrolling discredited spin doctor Richard Berman and his many front groups; and more.

Find the series here at ExposedbyCMD.org – The three conservative candidates for School Board in Manitowoc have direct or indirect ties to the Bradley Foundation (and/or organizations they fund). Bradley affiliated groups have funded or have ties to organizations that have had representatives speak in Manitowoc (Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty or WILL, Educate Don’t Indoctrinate et. al.)

While Vlastecia and his cohort’s attack on all of us in the progressive movement in Wisconsin and beyond, we at WI BOPM and our friends continue to focus on ensuring that the Manitowoc Public School District remain public. And that all of our children have access to every aspect of public education they deserve.
