Dear Friends:

February is Black History Month, but all over the country the teaching of black history in schools, colleges, and universities is under attack.

Black History courses are being revised to benefit a white supremacist narrative. Books are being banned and certain historical figures and events are being removed from the curriculum. Newark’s own Amiri Baraka has been removed from the College Board’s Advanced Placement African American Studies Course.

Laws have been introduced to punish and even jail teachers who dare to use banned books or teach prohibited subject matter. Under the guise of prohibiting the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) more than 500 bills have been introduced in state legislatures nationwide that would negatively impact the teaching of black history.

In response to the attack on Black History the People’s Organization For Progress (POP) is calling for a Protest Against The Ban On Black History,” Saturday, February 25, 2023, 11:00am, at the Lincoln Statue, 12 Springfield Avenue, in Newark, New Jersey.

Everyone is asked to make every effort to attend this event. Please arrive at 10:30am so we can begin on time.  The Lincoln Statue is located at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and West Market Street in downtown Newark.

This protest will be publicly announced during my remarks at a Black History Program I would like you to attend this weekend.

A Black History Month Celebration will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023, 11:00amat the Mount Zion Baptist Church of Newark, 208 Broadway in Newark, NJ. I have been invited to be the guest speaker for this program and will discuss the protest during my presentation. Please be there.
