5:30pm – TBD (depends on how many people give public comment)
Milwaukee City Hall, 200 E Wells Street, Room 301-B
Public Comment is strongly encouraged – we have talking points we’d love you to use. We will have organizers on hand to provide support drafting & preparing for comment, too.
CONTEXT
It was recently revealed that a Milwaukee Police Officer was caught using MPD’s Flock cameras to stalk two people, including a romantic interest. This is one of dozens of cases nationally AND locally. This crime is the most predictable outcome of having & using fascist technology like Flock. On top of that, cities across the nation AND locally have been cancelling their contracts with Flock because of it’s vulnerable databases and systems, and have been removing ALPRs all together because they are being accessed by federal law enforcement – including ICE.
You can read more detailed information about the dangers of Flock on our social media posts on Instagram & Facebook.
The presence of Flock cameras also puts at risk our campaign to prevent facial recognition technology (FRT) from harming our city. As long as Flock data exists, any outside law enforcement company with FRT access can run the city’s Flock data in their FRT system to track people. The whole surveillance apparatus was built to work together to violate our rights and we have to take down the whole system.
ACTIONS
1.Visit haveibeenflocked.com and run your plate through the system. This takes 30 seconds. If you have a hit, please screenshot it and email it to milwaukee4palestine@proton.me. Why: the way we learned of the MPD officer’s abuse of Flock was through one of his victims. The victim ran his plate through this website and discovered all the searches. If you have been searched, we can work together to determine the best next steps to protect you and use this information for accountability.
2. Email the Common Council using this template. Urge them to support the effort to De-Flock Milwaukee, and at the very least to assert their power to approve the purchase & use of Flock cameras – a power they currently do not have, though they should.
