Pomona College moves toward dropping Starbucks!
After organizing by Students Against Starbucks and student baristas in support of Starbucks Workers United, Pomona is moving toward ending its campus Starbucks contract, pending faculty approval.
Lina McRoberts, a Claremont Student Worker Alliance (CSWA) steering member and leader of the Drop Starbucks campaign at Pomona, called out the school for ignoring student input and violating its own values around shared governance.
“There’s this obvious, ‘We know that students are going to oppose it, and so if we just don’t ask them, they can’t oppose it because they didn’t have the option,’” McRoberts said.
College students have backed baristas since the beginning. Students Against Starbucks launched in 2023 when students across the country began demanding their universities cut ties with Starbucks until the company bargained a fair union contract. That pressure works. Cornell University cut ties with Starbucks after student organizing. The blueprint for accountability already exists.
| When students organize alongside workers, it sends a clear message that campus values matter. Young voices are shaping this fight and refusing to accept union busting as business as usual. Students are demanding fair contracts, accountability for union-busting, and the resolution of all pending unfair labor practices. Check out the Instagram update and show your support.
