MADISON LABOR AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO HOLD JULY 31, 2026 PRESS
CONFERENCE TO SUPPORT DEMANDS OF PROTEST ENCAMPMENT
MADISON – Labor and community leaders will hold a press conference on July 31st at 6pm at the Social Justice Center: 1202 Williamson St, Madison, WI 53703 to support the demands of community organizers about justice for Corey Ruiz and community control of police.
The labor and community leaders organizing the July 31 press conference have published a written statement:
“On July 22, Corey Ruiz was murdered by Madison Police Department Officer Kiel Peterson.
We stand in solidarity with Corey’s family and community in advancing the following demands:
- The Immediate arrest of Kiel Bailinger-Peterson
- That all information found in the investigation conducted by the Department of Criminal Investigation be turned over to the Office of Independent Police Monitor and Civilian Oversight Board.
- Community control over the police.
We condemn the execution of Corey Ruiz, and condemn the system which makes Blackness a crime punishable by death. Whether it is police occupation of Black communities, or ICE terror unleashed on immigrant communities, these agencies are arms of state violence against the working class. Police serve as strikebreakers and as watchdogs of property and the security force of the richest and most powerful.
We reiterate, as always, that an injury to one is an injury to all. Solidarity with protestors who demand justice and with all those who continue to hold the intersection of Baldwin and
Williamson streets in memorial for Corey Ruiz. Justice for Corey Ruiz.”
