Join Progressive Lakeshore People and other social justice and faith based organizations for a “Week of Unity in our Community”. Each day during the week, our community will be gathering together to acknowledge Mayor Nickels Proclamation of “Love not Hate” week.

Saturday, 9/12: In Washington Park on Saturday, September 12, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. Progressive Lakeshore People will kick off Love not Hate week with a rally. Our rally will focus on supporting marginalized community members of all identities and places of origin. We will have speakers, music, colorful decorations, and celebratory stickers and buttons. Local supportive groups and organizations have been invited to set up in the park to share resources, knowledge, and supportive friendship with one another. We will welcome organizations such as NAMI, PFLAG, Gracious Givers, WI BOPM and more. We hope to see you there to celebrate the first annual Love not Hate week in Manitowoc!
Thursday, 9/17: The Parkview Playhouse will be showing a free film in honor of Love not Hate week: TransMilitary (2018). Doors open at 6:00pm and the film will be shown at 6:30pm. This award-winning documentary gives insight into what it’s like for transgender people to serve (or try to serve when denied an equal right to serve) in the United States military. Although this film is free to public, donations will be accepted. Parkview Playhouse is located at 932 S 12th St, Manitowoc, WI 54220.
Saturday, 9/19: We will welcome the Unity Mobile to Manitowoc at 2:30 pm in Washington Park. The Unity Mobile, positivity and community unity on wheels, is visiting 50 Wisconsin communities, crisscrossing our state for the Fight For Our Lives Democracy Tour. The bus is all about Peace, People, and Plan et: a nonpartisan project. While the bus travels, documentary filmmakers are recording Wisconsin people in the communities they visit. We, Progressive Lakeshore People, are doing Butterfly Builds to create many large colorful butterflies to welcome the bus: a kaleidoscope of colorful and diverse migrants. Everyone is invited to make and bring a butterfly, a sign, or a flag. While nonpartisan, the bus organizers are encouraging everyone to register and get out to vote in upcoming elections.
A note on butterfly builds: There are butterfly build events happening around the community. Watch the Progressive Lakeshore People’s website, progressivelakeshorepeople.org, for opportunities in the weeks before Love Not Hate week, or attend the Noon butterfly build at the Progressive Lakeshore People’s Parkview Playhouse at 932 S. 12Th St. on 9/19. Donations to help buy materials will be accepted.

Saturday, 9/19: A community potluck with the Unity Mobile folks will be held at the Lakeshore United Methodist Church at 5:30pm. Everyone is welcome! Lakeshore United Methodist Church is located at 411 Reed Ave. in Manitowoc.
Although Love Not Hate week was created by the Progressive Lakeshore People, and especially the LGBTQ and Allies committee of PLP, we are pleased that our city has embraced the idea and we want to make this a city wide effort to bring more love and positivity to Manitowoc. All peace loving people who want to stand up against discrimination are welcomed.
