Saturday, September 12: Witness to Genocide: Empty Shoe Vigil for Gaza & Palestine, King Street Corner, Capitol Square8 – 10:30 am
Mennonite Action Madison invites you to join them in a vigil bearing witness to the plight of the people of Gaza and Palestine. Features 200+ pairs of shoes (many of them are children’s shoes) laid out on the walkway leading up to the State Capitol from the square. Representing the more than 75,000 people of Gaza who have been killed by Israeli forces in the past 2 1/2 years, this stunning visual gets a lot of attention from farmers’ market shoppers. Laminated photos with brief descriptions of children who have been killed in Gaza will also be displayed. In addition, we will be present with signs showing support for the people of Palestine and engage with passers-by. We will also urge people to write to Sen. Tammy Baldwin to pressure her to stop providing additional military support to Israel.What can you do? (1) Help set up the shoe exhibit at 7:30 am; (2) show up in solidarity and engage with passers-by, as you feel led; (3) hold a sign showing your support; and (4) help clean up the shoe exhibit from 10:30 – 11:00 am.
