Bobby Hutton (1950–1968), often affectionately known as “Lil’ Bobby,” became the first recruit and treasurer of the Black Panther Party in late 1966 when he was just 16 years old. Deeply committed to civil rights and community survival programs in Oakland, California, Hutton quickly became a central figure in the party’s early development alongside founders Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. On April 6, 1968—just two days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—Hutton was killed by Oakland police officers following a shootout involving Panther members, despite having surrendered unarmed and stripped down to his underwear to prove he posed no threat. At just 17 years old, he became the first Black Panther killed by law enforcement, and his tragic death galvanized the Civil Rights Movement, solidifying his place in history as an enduring symbol of youth activist sacrifice.
