Starbucks just quietly gutted baristas’ health coverage

Starbucks is at it again. 🙄

This time, they’ve nearly doubled what baristas pay for health insurance while quietly lowering their own contribution.

The Seattle Times reports that as benefits enrollment opened for the new fiscal year, workers got hit with nearly double the price tag for health insurance. One remote corporate worker told the paper her weekly premium more than doubled, from about $25 to about $55, for the same plan. 📈

“Starbucks should not be able to make life-altering decisions about our benefits while the baristas who make its profits possible struggle to get by,” said Jasmine Leli, Starbucks barista and union bargaining delegate. The company is “pricing even more baristas out of the healthcare we need.”

Members across the country are telling Starbucks Workers United the same story… the company changed the percentage it pays and is forcing workers to pay up to twice as much of their co-premium. The union asked Starbucks for more information last month. Starbucks hasn’t meaningfully responded. 🤐This is why it’s so important union baristas win their contract! Tell Starbucks it’s time to finalize a contract NOW. Are you a Starbucks partner paying for health insurance through the company? Or know someone who works at Starbucks? We want to hear from you, even if your store hasn’t organized a union yet. Take or share the survey!
