Philadelphia just made history.
City Council passed a unanimous resolution calling on Philadelphians, neighboring councils, and the Council itself to boycott Starbucks until the company signs a union contract. Philly is officially the first U.S. city to back the boycott. Not a petition. Not a tweet. An official vote from a city council.
“Philly is a union town!” said Councilmember Nicolas O’Rourke, who introduced the resolution. Say it louder for Starbucks HQ.
Baristas know what’s at stake. Christie, who works at the Penn Medicine store, transferred from Easton and went 89 days without a chance to work. And Philadelphia AFL-CIO President Danny Bauder put it plainly: Starbucks got close to a fair deal with baristas, then walked away. “The only reason they walked away is greed.”
And Philly wasn’t alone for long. St. Louis City Council backed the boycott too. Who’s next?
Here’s this week’s brew:
When even Starbucks shareholders are fed up with how the company treats workers
New York City’s comptroller filed a shareholder proposal asking Starbucks to bring back the board committee that oversaw labor relations. Together, they hold nearly $270 million in Starbucks shares. Turns out a turnaround plan doesn’t work when you skip the people making the coffee. Shareholders have noticed.
Here’s why the President of North Texas Labor is boycotting Starbucks.
More people are joining the boycott every day, and North Texas is showing up. Union members across the state are skipping Starbucks and standing with the baristas who make their coffee. When working people stick together, corporations notice. Starbucks can end this anytime by settling a fair contract.
AFSCME Council 31 is ditching Starbucks.
They’re sitting this one out until management gets serious about respecting employees and agrees to a fair union contract. Baristas have backup, Starbucks. Lots of it.
Every skipped cup adds pressure.
Stay loud, stay in solidarity, and thanks for being here with us!
In solidarity,
Starbucks Workers United
