Protest Police Terror in London (and the U.S.)!

The following demonstration sponsored by the Bail Out The People Movement is taking place in New York City but the organizers are encouraging similar protests for around the United States as police terror is at epidemic levels all across the country especially in cities with high populations of people of color such as Milwaukee.

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=219117104802983

NATIONAL CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH THE UK UPRISINGS –
PROTEST POLICE TERROR IN LONDON

• We urge you to help organize protests at British consulates, BBC News offices and other sites in cities across North America.

• Endorse and circulate this call of action in solidarity with the UK uprisings

We call on progressives and people of conscience to stand with the youth of the UK against state repression. We demand:

• JUSTICE FOR MARK DUGGAN – JAIL THE KILLER COPS

• FREEDOM & AMNESTY FOR THE 2000 WHO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED

• STOP THE WITCH HUNT AGAINST YOUTH & END RACIST POLICE VIOLENCE

• JOBS & EDUCATION – NOT JAIL & AUSTERITY – Make Cameron’s government and big business create jobs, restore vital services, and rebuild affected communities

In New York, a protest is planned on Monday, August 15, from 4:30-6:00 pm at the British Consulate-General, 845 Third Avenue between 51 and 52 Sts. in Manhattan. (Take 4 or 6 train to 51st St., E or M train to Lexington Ave. / 53rd St.)

————————–-

Dear friends,

We are writing to you on an urgent matter. As you know, the streets of London and other British cities erupted in rebellion earlier this week, following the police killing of a young Black man and father of three, Mark Duggan, in the Tottenham area on August 4. Many thousands of youths of all colors and nationalities took to the streets in angry protest, not only at the killing of Mark Duggan, but at rampant police brutality, high unemployment, and brutal cuts to education and social services.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “When you cut facilities, slash jobs, abuse power, discriminate, drive people into deeper poverty and shoot people dead while refusing to provide answers or justice, the people will rise up and express their anger and frustration if you refuse to hear their cries. A riot is the language of the unheard.”

Today a smear campaign is well underway in the media and halls of power in both Britain and the United States. The youth are labeled “criminals” and “looters,” while authorities downplay the crimes of the London police, who first claimed to have shot Duggan in self-defense, only to have their lies exposed by ballistics tests and eyewitnesses.

We have seen endless footage of burning cars and people taking consumer goods from shattered storefronts during the nights of August 6-9. Meanwhile, there has been little coverage of the massacre of 85 civilians, including 33 children, in the town of Zlitan, Libya, by NATO forces overnight August 8. Britain, like the U.S., is central to that war of unbridled aggression against a sovereign African country.

Who are the real looters? In Britain, like the U.S., banks and big business were bailed out of their economic crisis and the war machine rolls on – while workers, students and the unemployed, especially youths and people of color, are expected to shoulder the burden of cutbacks and high unemployment.

Now an unprecedented wave of repression is underway. More than 1,100 people have been arrested so far, and Scotland Yard has begun raiding homes of suspected “rioters.” Some 16,000 riot police occupy London’s streets.

Prime Minister David Cameron, whose government of bailouts for the rich and cutbacks for the poor has done so much to create an environment ripe for rebellion, called parliament into emergency session. Cameron and other establishment politicians are whipping up a lynch-mob atmosphere against rebel youths, urging people to turn in those they recognize from security camera footage broadcast over the major media.

In conditions of deepening poverty, joblessness and racist repression, it is inevitable that people will rise up. What happened in London could happen tomorrow in New York, Los Angeles or any other U.S. city.

We call on progressives and people of conscience to stand with the youth of the UK against state repression.

To rebel against racism and poverty is justified!

Support Carlos Montes as he goes to court Friday, August 12

Call
President Barak Obama at 202-456-1111

Attorney General Eric Holder at 202-514-2001

Sample call: “My name is ________ and I am calling from [city, state]. I’m calling about Carlos Montes of Los Angeles. He is one of the anti-war activists being targeted by the FBI. I want you to tell Attorney General Holder [or President Obama]:
1. Drop the charges against Carlos Montes!

2. Stop the FBI and the Grand Jury repression of the other 23 anti-war and international solidarity activists.

3. Return all property to Carlos Montes and the other activists raided by the FBI.
The U.S. government should not be prosecuting us when we exercise our rights to freedom of speech and dissent.”

On Friday, August 12, Carlos Montes will appear in a Los Angeles court again, for a preliminary hearing. At his last court date on July 6, Carlos pled “Not guilty!” to six charges, including a felony charge each for a firearm and ammunition, and four related to the permits’ paperwork. Like millions of Americans, Carlos has for many years held legal permits. So why is it that all of a sudden the government is saying there is a problem? These charges are a pretext to attack Carlos for his years of activism.

Please join us in calling U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and President Obama, demanding a stop to the prosecution of Carlos Montes. We need to stop the persecution of political activists like Carlos, like the 23 Midwest anti-war and international solidarity activists, people like you and me.

Make no mistake; the U.S. government’s trial of Carlos Montes is an attack on the immigrants’ rights and anti-war movements. So please call today and let Holder and Obama know we are building a movement that will not bow down to dirty tricks and political repression.

We Will Not Pay For Your Crisis! Madison rally August 25

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=139678456118743

Solidarity March and Rally with State Workers
Thursday, August 25th, 2011
4:30PM Library Mall and March to the Capitol
5:00PM Rally at the Capitol

On this day Wisconsin State Employees will receive up to a 13% pay cut
courtesy of Gov. Walker.

This pay cut does not just impact state workers, but all Wisconsinites.

The Economic Policy Institute estimates that wage reductions implemented by Act 10 will cost the state nearly $1 billion in economic activity.

Walker and his cronies demand wage cuts for workers while offering massive handouts to corporations and the super-wealthy. Nationally, we are told by both sides of the political aisle that there must be “shared sacrifice” to solve our current fiscal woes. This translates to working people paying for the crisis caused by bankers and Wall Street.

Stand with state workers on August 25th to say “Enough!” We have sacrificed, and it is time that the corporate class pay its fair share.

Join the fight for a decent quality of life in Wisconsin.

From a Unity@Verizon Email Message:

We’re Not Alone in This Fight

We’re getting tremendous support from our union brothers and sisters, on the picket lines and in public statements. Teamsters President James P. Hoffa Jr. issued a statement of support this morning, echoing the leadership of many other unions. Members of the UFCW have been showing up at picket lines with food and drink, and members of the Postal Workers, Steelworkers, UNITE HERE, and other unions are picking up signs and adding their voices.

CWA and IBEW locals in other sectors and outside the footprint have taken on our fight as their own, from picketing a San Francisco Wireless store to refusing to act as managers who are sent East to scab.

CWA President Larry Cohen will be on the Ed Schultz show tonight, August 10, 10:30 p.m. EDT.
