The elections are not the last word — keep fighting for socialism!

By L.T. Pham posted on September 22, 2016, http://www.workers.org/

Join Workers World Party and hundreds of activists from around the country and the world for the annual WWP National Conference on Nov. 11-13 in New York.

2016 has seen nothing short of an assault on the movement for justice, liberation and self-determination. But it has also been an incredible year of struggle, where the most militant people have risen up to say no more to exploitation, violence and repression, all facilitated by capitalism.

The conference will come only days after the presidential elections. Working and oppressed people will, without a doubt, be disappointed by the results. But where will we go from there? How will we channel our righteous rage and frustration into action? These are the questions we will take up as we honor the brave young people, communities and organizers who have confronted power and are claiming the future.

Regardless of who becomes the next president of the United States, we know that the truth remains: So long as the U.S. has the ability to terrorize Black and Brown people at home and abroad, so long as workers can barely afford to live, so long as LGBTQ people and women are under attack, so long as the politicians, bosses and bankers rule our lives, we must fight, fight, fight!

If you are interested in learning about and discussing why we must keep fighting for socialism, join Workers World Party at the Malcolm X & Betty Shabazz Center in New York City — the historical site of the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated on Feb. 21, 1965.

The annual WWP National Conference will convene revolutionaries and organizers from the frontlines of struggles, from Black Lives Matter to Palestine Solidarity, from anti-war to Fight for $15, from the LGBTQ struggle to women’s liberation and immigrants’ rights.

We lift up the struggles that need solidarity, not only here in the U.S. but also around the world — to end the blockade still on Cuba, end U.S. war aggression in Syria, stop the subversion of Venezuela, and show solidarity with migrants to the U.S. and the European Union. We lift up the banners of internationalism and socialist unity to build toward a revolution that will liberate all workers and oppressed people.

We choose ourselves — not the warmonger Hillary Clinton who called Black youths “predators,” not the hate-mongering billionaire Donald Trump who nurtures Klan and Nazi types. We choose solidarity — not the state’s tools of division, not the comfort of isolation.

We choose the movement — not the lies of the election, not the idea that the powers that be will fall on their own. We choose a path to revolution — not the lure of a softer, kinder capitalism, not another day of chains and cages. Let us continue to build the movement against capitalism, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia and more!

Black Lives Matter! Defend Native sovereignty! Abolish the police! Smash capitalism! LGBTQ liberation now! End women’s oppression! Free Palestine! The working class has no borders! http://www.workers.org/wwp/vote-for-socialism/

National Writers Union President: Strike Against Racist Police Terror

September 22, 2016 by

Three more unarmed black people have been shot and killed by the police. They include a teenager with a BB gun in Columbus, OH; a young man with his hands in the air, returning from class in Tulsa, OK; and a man sitting in his car, reading a book in Charlotte, NC. (Another black man was shot at a demonstration in downtown Charlotte while protesting the death of the man killed by police. He is on life support.) The police who pulled the trigger are men and women, black and white.

These attacks have become commonplace. Rather than being cowed by mass protests and a flood of citizen cell-phone videos, they seem to have been emboldened by the lack of prosecutions by local and federal officials. The depiction of these individuals as “a few bad apples,” has long since been proven false. And now the Fraternal Order of Police has endorsed Trump for President and his platform of racism, sexism and anti-immigrant hysteria.

Despite reports that the economy has recovered from the 2008 crash, the gap in income and employment between black and white workers remains virtually unchanged. And even as we fight to raise the minimum wage, $15/hour won’t pay the rent in NYC.

Plus, we live in an unstable world. The 2003 invasion of Iraq has created a firestorm throughout the Middle East, killing millions and creating millions more refugees, with no end in sight. In Syria, U.S. and Russian troops and fighter jets are dangerously close to one another.  Racist police terror is, in part, a way to terrorize black youth into accepting a future of poverty and war.

There is mass revulsion at this reign of terror. More and more groups and individuals, from Colin Kaepernick to the Oakland School Children, are taking a knee during the National Anthem. This is an issue for all workers, for every union.

What would happen if the next time police killed someone, workers walked off their jobs and marched to police headquarters or City Hall? And what if they were joined by walkouts on college campuses and high schools? And if the city were shut down until the shooter was off the streets? This may not be as out of reach as it seems. Professional athletes have a big spotlight to draw media attention, but as writers we have many avenues to take a stand, and we know many more writers that we can engage. Talk to one another, raise resolutions, spread the word.

UBLAC’s Solidarity Message
It is apparent that we cannot afford to be silent in times of unrest, nor can we be solely concerned with the events happening in Milwaukee.

In 2016, almost 200 black people have been killed by police.
9 black women, 164 were black men.
6 were under the age of 18 years old.
15 were recognized as being unarmed.

Milwaukee, Ferguson, Tulsa, Philadelphia, and New York City are just some of the cities who have continued to see black men killed by law enforcement. People of color are feeling the pain and the hurt all over the United States. We are feeling the hopelessness and the restlessness. We will not allow our rights to be continuously disregarded.

We are in the age of revolution and change.

As members of another marginalized community, we stand with you. As members of UBLAC, we stand with you. As black mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, uncles, brothers, nephews, and nieces, we stand with you. What happens in Tulsa and Charlotte effects what happens in Milwaukee. Though our communities are separated by miles, and state lines, we are fighting the same battles. We are fighting to change the same systems that address issues with a narrow mindset. We are fighting the same systems that devalue people of color as individuals, and award officers with paid leave when they reinforce those systems. We can not allow the judicial system to continue operating, as it is, and expect different results.

Rest In Power, Terence Crutcher.
Rest In Power, Keith Lamont Scott.

Sincerely,
UBLAC Milwaukee (Uplifting Black Liberation and Community)
A coalition of Black women, queer and trans people working toward Black liberation.

SEPTEMBER 24: SHOW UP IN CHARLOTTE!

Message in Italics from Workers World Party Durham Branch

In light of the developments in Charlotte in the aftermath of the murder of #KeithLamontScott, conference organizers are having an emergency meeting to figure out how to approach this Saturday’s conference. In the meantime – please circulate this announcement from folks on the ground in Charlotte:
————————————————–
As you know, Charlotte has been rocked in recent days by a police occupation following the police murder of Keith Lamont Scott, an unarmed Black man. As the governor escalates action against protesters on the ground, the uprising is gaining steam — this is a movement moment, and we need all hands on deck.

We are asking allied organizations to send out the information below to your networks, *especially* your networks in the Southeast. Please let me know how widely your organization is willing to share this call to action, whether by email, social media, text, and/or any other means you have.

On Tuesday, our brother and neighbor Keith Lamont Scott was killed by Charlotte police. He was sitting in his car, reading a book, and waiting for his son to come home on the school bus. We believe he was profiled and killed by police, and that CMPD is not telling the truth about his murder. Show Up For Charlotte

Tuesday night, Charlotte police attacked a grieving community with riot police and tear gas. Wednesday night, Charlotte police fired into a crowd, seriously injuring a protestor and inflaming our grief. Show Up For Charlotte

Today, our city is occupied by the National Guard and we are in a State of Emergency! Show Up For Charlotte

Charlotte, the latest city to be wrecked by police violence against Black people and violence against Black people, is a national crisis. We need to end this epidemic now! Let’s show the nation that we stand against police violence that targets Black people and our communities. Mining Leaves a Wisconsin Tribe’s Hallowed Sites at Risk

https://intercontinentalcry.org/mining-leaves-a-wisconsin-tribes-hallowed-sites-at-risk/

“…There is a palpable change in the tribe as it gathers its voice against the mine, Reiter says. Speaking events, fliers, websites and new partnerships proliferate, but that’s only half the story: Tribal members have taken to days-long walks from the reservation to the Menominee River, tracing their ancestors’ steps. They’ve re-seeded the river’s mouth with wild rice—Menominee is Algonkian for “People of the wild rice,” and other tribes in the region said that when the Menominee appeared, wild rice followed. When they left, the rice passed.

The tribe has also reinstituted language programs at schools. The mine debate, Reiter says, has rekindled the tribe’s river roots.

It’s a revival Reiter himself has lived. In rallying against the mine, he’s learned from elders of the obligation to watch over the river…”

People of Color Space/Frente X at Encuentro

Border Encuentro: People of Color Space in Tucson, Arizona on October 8

We are excited to anounce the creation of a People of Color (POC) Space at the Encuentro! We believe that the Encuentro provides a unique opportunity for those most directly impacted by state sanctioned violence in the U.S., Latin America, and beyond to learn from one another, and begin building networks of inter-racial, transnational solidarity among each other.

For more information on the POC Space and Frente X, the new collective leading its creation, please visit http://soaw.org/border/frentex or email us at FrenteX@protonmail.com

The moral necessity to make the Encuentro/Convergence accessible to our undocumented family led us to create the POC Space in Tucson, AZ, where people are not forced to traverse a Border Patrol checkpoint in order to arrive. A workshop and/or space to discuss solidarity for white allies is being organized in Nogales, stay tuned for more details.

  • POC Space/Frente X Living Statement – A new collective of POC organizers, Frente X for International Liberation, or “Frente X”, has taken the lead in creating the POC Space. Frente X seeks to build upon the history of the SOA Watch movement by creating a Space at the Encuentro where Latinx, Black, Arab, South Asian, API, and other POC, can plant the seeds for an anti-imperialist network in which POC in the U.S. build solidarity with not just Latin Americans, but with each other. Gender justice is a founding principle of Frente X, and the leadership and inclusion of youth, womyn, gay, queer, trans & gender non-conforming POC in the Space/collective is of utmost importance. Click here to read the “living” statement of the principles, demands, and goals of Frente X, which will be finalized at or after the Encuentro.
  • POC Space Schedule of Events – Participants in the POC Space are encouraged to attend the Encuentro’s opening event, the vigil/rally outside of the Eloy Detention Center on 10/7. A full day of POC Space programming will then take place in Tucson on Saturday 10/8. Please see the recommended schedule for the Encuentro for POC Space participants, and visit the POC Space webpage for updates, schedule, workshops, and other information for the POC Space.
  • POC Space Registration – In order to be able to best finalize our preparations for the POC Space and keep in contact with those attending, considering attending, or simply interested in the POC Space/Frente X‘s work and/or donating to it, please fill out this form, which includes table registration for POC Space. We are also looking for POC interpreters, healers, peace-makers, and others familiar with restorative justice and/or conflict resolution. Please email FrenteX@protonmail.com if you are interested in supporting in this way.
  • POC Space Workshop Applications (9/23 deadline) – We are accepting applications for workshops for the Saturday 10/8 POC Space program. The application deadline is this Friday, September 23 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time, but will continue accepting applications on a rolling basis. Either way, please submit an application ASAP. Existing workshops include: Trans women in immigration detention and the borderlands; U.S. governement surveillance of Black Muslim immigrant population; Social movements in Mexico (by Ayotzinapa school student). We are asking workshop applicants to address inter-racial, transnational solidarity, gender justice and/or that they be open to collaborating with other groups/individuals. Please fill out this form if you are interested in conducting a workshop.
  • Travel Advisory & Know Your Rights in Arizona – Important information to help you prepare and know risks in traveling to Tucson and/or Nogales AZ, and/or Nogales MX: (English) (Spanish)
  • Rideshare – If you are looking for rides, or can offer rides to the Encuentro, please visit this Facebook Community page.

For updates and more information on the POC Space or Frente X visit our page in English and Spanish. For more information on the overall Border Encuentro, visit http://soaw.org/border

And please forward this email to your friends, comrades, family members, and colleagues that may be interested in this ongoing initiative, whether or not they are able to atend this year’s POC Space at the Border Encuentro!

October 6: Wisconsin Day to Reclaim Our Schools

We will unite with hundreds of school districts across the nation on Thursday, October 6 to demand publicly funded, equitable, and democratically controlled public schools.
This national action will help shift the public debate and build a national movement for strong public schools for every child.

Here in Milwaukee, we will be organizing one of two powerful actions at each school around public education funding. Each school will hold either a morning walk-in or an afternoon neighborhood walk with parents, students, community members, and educators.

These actions will help us build our movement to expose and reverse the funding inequities that exist in Wisconsin’s public schools.

Begin organizing your school community’s Oct. 6 action today! Talk with your MTEA building leaders and register at mtea.org.
