Milwaukee, September 27: Martin Fernandez at Alverno College

Come and hear directly from Martin Fernández at Alverno College (Alumnae Hall in the Sister Joel Read Center).

Martin is the National Coordinator of the Movement for Dignity and Justice (MADJ) in Honduras, which seeks to expose and combat state violence and corruption, while organizing communities around the principles of self-determination, ecological sustainability, and collective resistance. The grassroots organization has been routinely subjected to threats and intimidation due to their human rights work. Martín will discuss this work in the context of Honduras today, and how US policies and security aid contribute directly to the ongoing crisis.

More Context
The 2009 military coup in Honduras cemented the Central American nation as a hotbed of human rights abuses, the new frontier in the US-led War on Drugs, and an all-out plunder of national territory and resources. Those who resist are targeted and killed with a level of impunity unheard of in the 21st century in Latin America; the March 2nd assassination of beloved Indigenous leader Berta Cáceres is an example of state crime and impunity amongst many. Those who head North are often sent back to the very violence and poverty from which they fled. The heart of the crisis is the US policies of militarization, the legitimization of a brutal Honduran State, and the promotion of crony capitalism. For the Honduran people, the results are violent and devastating, but their inspiring resistance continues.

This event is supported by the Alverno Center for Academic Excellence, Department of World Languages, CHICA, College Democrats, and Global Studies Club.

SELF-DETERMINATION FOR THE SYRIAN PEOPLE

The US war for regime change in Syria has taken a new and dangerous turn with the recent bombing of Syrian forces, which were fighting ISIS extremists.  The bombing led to a temporary victory for ISIS and fireworks between the U.S. and Russia at the UN. This has been coupled with an increase in war propaganda, which usually means an escalation of war.

UNAC is calling for actions in opposition to this escalation.  We will be joining with others  at the UN  Headquarters in New York City on Wednesday, 9/21, 9 AM – 11 AM at East 47 St & 2nd Ave.  See the Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1834362000118202/ .  Please join us.

We also support an action in Boston  on Saturday,  9/24 at  1 PM at the Park Street  Station.  Please  see the  Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/623831724443590/?ti=icl.

Maryland and District of Columbia AFL-CIO: THE ENSLAVEMENT OF AFRICANS IN THE UNITED STATES WAS WRONG!

Maryland and District of Columbia AFL-CIO

Executive Board

September 17, 2016

A Resolution

THE ENSLAVEMENT OF AFRICANS IN THE UNITED STATES WAS WRONG!

Whereas, between 1619 and 1865, millions of Africans and their descendants were enslaved in the 13 colonies and the United States; and

Whereas, this system of slavery is recognized as being the most brutal, dehumanizing and humiliating known to history, as people were sold at auction as chattel, killed at will and families torn apart; and

Whereas, after 246 years of legally sanction slavery and the end of the Civil War and the passage of the 13th Amendment, prohibiting slavery except as punishment for a crime; and after emancipation, African Americans saw the hope and promises of ‘freedom’ diminished by “Jim Crow” and a system of Black Codes that established a horrific system of race separation and segregation in all areas of American life; and

Whereas, African Americans still suffer from the evils of slavery and “Jim Crow”, as evidenced negatively in social and economic indicators, resulting in the loss of income, quality of life and dignity; and,

Whereas, the realities of slavery and ‘Jim Crow’ and their lingering practices and effects must not be purged or left out of the telling of our American story, or the progress of its peoples; and

Whereas, in 2003, President Bush appropriately stated that:  ‘Slavery was .… one of the greatest crimes of history….And many of the issues that still trouble America have roots in the bitter experience of other times.  But however long the journey, our destiny is set:  liberty and justice for all”; and

Whereas, the National AFL-CIO in 2015 established its Commission on Race and the Economy, acknowledging that:  “America’s legacy of racism and racial injustice has been and continues to be a fundamental obstacle to workers’ efforts to act together…..We have to find a way to see with each other’s eyes, and address the facts and realities….The fight against racism is about whom we choose to be….To that end, it is time for a frank and thoughtful discussion on racial inequality;”

Now Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Maryland State and District of Columbia AFL-CIO commits to the furtherance of that discussion and will seek to enhance that discussion, and strengthen the unity among workers, by acknowledging and stating unequivocally that the Enslavement of Africans in the United States of America Was Wrong! And,

Therefore Be It Finally Resolved, that we will popularize this acknowledgement at all levels of the union movement and in our communities, using this acknowledgement to help guide us in our continuing discussions and the search for equitable solutions to our country’s ongoing racial challenges.

(adopted at the MD/DC AFL-CIO September 17, 2016 Executive Board meeting)

United Electrical Workers Union Stands in Solidarity With Standing Rock

http://www.ueunion.org/

The UE National Officers on Sept. 12 issued the following statement in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux people of North Dakota in their struggle to protect their land and water from the oil industry. United Electrical Workers (UE)

UE joins others in the labor movement in condemning the ongoing violent attacks on the Standing Rock Sioux nation and others who oppose the Dakota Access Pipeline. These attacks by a private security company bring back horrific memories of the notorious Pinkertons, who used clubs, dogs and bullets to break up peaceful worker protests.

As delegates to UE’s 74th National Convention said in the resolution “Protect Our Planet for Future Generations” in August 2015: “The energy profiteers want a world where both labor and environmental standards are in a race to the bottom. If they get their way, we get poverty and a poisoned planet. To defeat them and ensure the right of all people to live, work, and play in safe, healthy, and clean environments, we need to form stronger alliances.”
