Demanding pay justice for tomato workers

Two Wendy’s fast food restaurants in New York City’s West Village appeared to have more people picketing outside than they had customers inside on the rainy Saturday night of October 27. A multinational group of dozens of protesters demanded support for the farmworkers who pick tomatoes in Florida.

These exploited workers, with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, are paid piece work and are demanding recognition of their Fair Food Program. The program has become a partnership among farmers, tomato growers and 11 leading food corporations, including the five largest fast food companies — McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Taco Bell and Chipotle.

But Wendy’s refuses to agree to this plan that would improve pay for the farmworkers. Immokalee organizer Geraldo explained outside Wendy’s that farmworkers have suffered decades of abuse, “getting not only poverty wages but no overtime and violence against them from some bosses, with all their racism and sexism.” Since 1980 the tomato workers get only 50 cents for every 32 pounds of tomatoes a worker picks. This means he or she must pick nearly 2.5 tons of tomatoes to earn minimum wage in a typical 10-hour workday!

Shouting “Down, down, exploitation! Up, up, fair food nation!” tonight’s boycott protest included members of UNITE HERE, New York University students and religious leaders. Pickets kept going while Geraldo led a group into Wendy’s to deliver a letter of demands. “We have the power when we stand together!” he said upon his return from inside Wendy’s, where the boss had called police against the picketers. Chanting loudly, the protest moved on to another Wendy’s nearby.

CARACAS, VENEZUELA — United States sanctions against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela have cost the Latin American nation $6 billion since August of 2017, leaving the fate of healthcare and access to basic goods in jeopardy for millions of already struggling Venezuelans.

As recently as early October, an anonymous source from the Trump administration told Reuters that “all options are on the table” in regard to even tighter sanctions against the country. This is part of a growing trend, as the Trump administration prepares to strengthen its attacks against socialist or left-leaning nations throughout Latin America.

According to a report from Canadian analyst Joe Emersberger, U.S. sanctions have quite literally starved Venezuelans out of a staggering $6 billion since the latest round took effect in August of 2017, cutting Venezuela off from the global market…

Chronicling the Voices Fighting for Education Justice

BY CINDY LONG

A young girl handcuffed to a pole at a police station for the crime of doodling on her desk or a boy dragged by his collar through the mud and back through the school entrance before he could explain that his IEP allowed him to be outside are outrageous examples of institutional racism we don’t often hear about but that happen in our schools with alarming frequency. The new book Lift Us Up, Don’t Push Us Out: Voices from the Front Lines of the Educational Justice Movement, features voices of a new movement for educational justice. Each essayist tells the story of how black and brown parents, students, educators, and their allies are fighting back against profound and systemic inequities and mistreatment of children of color in low-income communities.

NEA Today spoke to one of the contributors, Zakiya Sankara-Jabar, who writes about how her African American son was pushed out of preschool. She is National Field Organizer for the Dignity in Schools Campaign and she co-founded Racial Justice NOW! to provide a voice for parents facing racism in schools. Within a few years they won a moratorium on pre-K suspensions in Dayton schools. We also spoke with Lift Us Up co-author Mark Warren, a professor of public policy and public affairs at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Warren studies and works with community and youth organizing groups seeking to promote equity and justice in education, community development, and American democratic life.

Brazilian left forces on Bolsonaro election

Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement (MST): “We will resist!”

Following the outcome of the presidential elections in Brazil, where extreme right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro was elected with a majority of the valid votes (55.1%), a broad process of resistance to the hate speech propagandized and put in practice during the election campaigns begins.

In a note released on Sunday night (October 28), Popular Brazil and Fearless People, composed of various movements, popular organizations and left-wing parties, pointed out that the elections are over, but the struggle for democracy and social rights is just beginning. That is, the result of the elections opens a window of popular resistance against fascism…

Our community is devastated. Loved ones and friends may never recover or be the same. It will take a collective to hold this officer accountable and remember that it will take a systemic approach to prevent this from happening again!
