Two IWW members will be at Milwaukee Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin, meeting room 2B, on Monday, September 23, 5:00-6:30 PM. They will be working on some of the activity they regularly do for the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee. Our work includes research, writing letters, data entry, and developing ideas for disrupting the horror that is the Wisconsin prison system. Come by if you want to see what’s involved with this organizing, ask questions, and maybe get involved in this. Free coffee and snacks are provided. Let us know if you need a ride to be able to attend. This gathering will be followed by our strategy meeting at 6:30-7:45 PM, visitors are welcome to attend this as well.

ATU LOCAL 998 CHALLENGES ‘BUDGET HOLE’ PROJECTION

Preliminary investigation points to millions of over projected MCTS operating expenses since 2015

MILWAUKEE, AUGUST 29, 2019 – The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 998 is demanding answers after a preliminary investigation by economic consultant Peter Donohue found that the County’s 2018 Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports (CAFRs) showed Milwaukee County Transit System’s actual operating expenses were under budget by $16.53 million from mostly over budgeting MCTS personnel expenses. A look at previous CAFRs show that $39.93 million budgeted for MCTS personnel expenses have possibly gone unspent, but the investigation won’t be complete until the County provides financial information requested.

ATU Local 998 President James Macon released the following statement regarding these findings:

“Milwaukee’s transit system is the economic backbone of the region. To siphon away tax dollars earmarked for the public transit is unconscionable. Year after year we are asked to make cuts. Buses are becoming more dangerous, routes are disappearing, and many riders have to walk excessive distances to get to the nearest bus stop.

“Based on these preliminary findings, we challenge Milwaukee County Transit System’s ‘budget hole’ narrative. We believe County Executive Chris Abele and MCTS are once again over budgeting their expenses in an attempt to justify cutting vital bus routes and hurting transit workers.

“This changes everything for our members. It raises serious questions about the integrity of MCTS’s claims that they are broke. We call on Milwaukee County to stop dragging its feet and provide the financial information requested.”

Puma is the main sponsor of the Israel Football Association (IFA), which proudly includes and advocates on behalf of teams in Israeli settlements pushing Palestinian families off their land. Israeli settlements are illegal and constitute a war crime under international law.

Last June, groups in more than 20 countries joined the first Global #BoycottPuma Day of Action. On social media, #BoycottPuma was THE most tweeted Puma-related hashtag that day.

Venezuelans Gather Eight Million Signatures Against US Blockade

At least eight million Venezuelans added their signatures to a document rejecting the U.S. blockade, which will be presented to the United Nations, according to official reports.

Since August 10, Bolivar squares across the country and makeshift stands have seen thousands of Venezuelans reiterate their repudiation of Washington’s coercive measures.

The signing of the document is part, along with marches and protests, of the global ‘No More Trump’ campaign, promoted by the Venezuelan government to denounce to the world the damages of the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on Venezuela.

President Nicolas Maduro assured last Friday that this campaign demonstrates courage, the will to fight, desire, passion and what Venezuelans feel towards Trump.

He stressed that this amount of signatures was achieved in ‘record time’ and recalled how in 2015 they collected almost 10 million signatures against an executive order from the US in which Venezuela was considered an unusual threat to its national security.

‘Enough of the blockade, enough of aggression, the people suffer, we will sign this letter that will reach the United Nations with the will of the Venezuelan people,’ he insisted.

In an interview with Xinhua agency, Maduro assured that the hostile U.S policy against this nation is a failure, but denounced the damage it causes to the economy and the people’s quality of life.

‘They have hurt us, and so I denounce it to the world. Great damage has been done to the quality and living standards of the people of Venezuela. But we are able to continue moving forward, despite these aggressions,’ he stressed during his statements to the Chinese agency.
