Yes, the same Wisconsin GOP politicians that stoked the uncontrolled spread of COVID by refusing to take statewide steps to stop its spread are now attempting to force Wisconsinites back into the unsafe situation they created. We won’t stand for it!
#DemandSafeSchools

Talk about a bunch of school yard bullies! Wisconsin Republican legislators sent this shameful letter to several school superintendents attempting to intimidate them into opening schools to in-person learning. The letter threatens to divert even more public funding from the state’s grossly underfunded public schools to unaccountable third party private operators. The letter also targets districts that made the prudent choice to start with full virtual learning by suggesting the educators in these districts be physically forced to run those virtual lessons from school buildings. Yes, the same politicians that stoked the uncontrolled spread of COVID by refusing to take statewide steps to stop its spread are now attempting to force Wisconsinites back into the unsafe situation they created. We won’t stand for it!

Remember Hiroshima – And Nagasaki! Stop the U.S. War Machine to Save Mother Earth!

Today in history: August 6, 1945 – The U.S. drops nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, the first use of nuclear weapons in war. Three days later the U.S. also uses nuclear bombs on Nagasaki, Japan. Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the effects killed 90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki, with roughly half of the deaths in each city occurring on the first day. The Hiroshima health department estimated that, of the people who died on the day of the explosion, 60% died from flash or flame burns, 30% from falling debris and 10% from other causes. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians. (Online), August 9, 2020: Safe Jobs Save Lives – Education Workers Demand Safety & a Voice Amid School Reopening Debate

Meeting logo
Education workers are on the move across the South and around the country as state governments and the Trump administration attempt to force teachers, custodians, bus drivers, food service workers, maintenance workers, and students back to schools. This is as the coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen, with particularly severe outbreaks in many states across the South.

We’ll hear from education workers who are organizing in K-12 and higher education to demand safety on the job and a voice in decisions on whether to reopen schools or leave them closed. Already, there have been many struggles breaking out and many victories that have won more PPE, hazard pay, and that have delayed reopening in the education sector.

In April, the Southern Workers Assembly launched the Safe Jobs Save Lives campaign to advance the organization of workers at the workplace and to build solidarity formations such as local workers assemblies, particularly in light of the many struggles breaking out in response to the crisis and a system that values profit above all else. The SWA views the development of this type of organization as critical to confront the two pandemics facing workers, particularly Black workers – COVID-19 and racism.

What can all workers learn from the struggles waged by education workers during this period? How can we continue to build a regional Safe Jobs Save Lives campaign, alongside the formation of workers unity council and workers assemblies? Join us for the discussion that will take up these and other questions.

Read the Letter Right Wing Legislators Sent to Superintendents Pressuring Them to Reopen Schools

Lawmakers who have power over nearly half of public education funds suggest “opening your doors” to all students.

A still unknown number of school superintendents across Wisconsin are receiving a letter from top Assembly Republicans –the people who control the purse strings to state education funds – strongly urging them to consider reopening their schools rather than opting for virtual learning this fall, according to a copy of the letter obtained by UpNorthNews.

The letter is being criticized as a power grab and a potential risk to educators’ and students’ health.

Dated July 29, the letter is signed by 47 of the Assembly’s 63 Republican members, including Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester; Majority Leader Jim Steineke, R-Kaukauna; and Assistant Majority Leader Mary Felzkowski, R-Irma.

In it they say the state is “minimally obligated” to provide a sound education to state students and ask the superintendents “to consider opening your doors this fall to provide every student with an in-class experience….”
