A note on the current situation in Masafer Yatta:

As Israel continues to strike Gaza and Lebanon, the entire civilian population of the West Bank is also facing unprecedented military and settler violence.  In just the first 12 days of October settlers carried out 219 violent attacks on Palestinian civilians, killing three people and injuring dozens.

Villages in Masafer Yatta,  at the southern end of the West Bank, are enduring brutal demolitions that have left more than 300 people without homes in just the past two months.   Israeli military bulldozers have destroyed homes, schools, mosques, agricultural structures, roads, olive groves, crops and water and energy infrastructure at a greatly increased rate.  More demolitions are expected in the coming weeks, and a state campaign to confiscate the cars and tractors of area families is now making it nearly impossible to deliver food, water, shelter materials, emergency medical care  and animal feed.  Many families are  trapped in their homes by settler violence and unable to graze their flocks, feed and water their animals, send their children to school  or harvest their olives.

Armed Israeli settlers, acting with the army’s protection and assistance, have ramped up a longstanding terror campaign that includes night raids, the use of sheep and goats to destroy crops and occupy private property, invading and occupying schools and  playgrounds, trapping  families inside their homes and preventing them from accessing food, water and even bathrooms, torching crops, vehicles, homes and mosques,  stealing, poisoning and killing livestock, and terrorizing, beating and seriously injuring residents. Israeli soldiers and police respond to these attacks by detaining the Palestinian residents and deporting international activists.

The families of Masafer-Yatta are struggling to remain on their land despite  these daily attacks and demolitions, carried out with impunity, funded with our tax dollars, and backed by the power of our foreign policy.  They need our solidarity, and we need to exert our right to not be complicit in the destruction of their lives.
