FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!
MAJOR PRESS CONFERENCE OCTOBER 13, 2026 FOR UNITED NATIONS PUSH FOR IMPRISONED JOURNALIST MUMIA ABU JAMAL!
MALCOLM X COMMEMORATION CMTE AMONG A SEA OF SUPPORTERS
On Tuesday, October 12th, numerous organized human rights forces will join a press conference outlining the petitioning of Mumia Abu Jamal to an important United Nations Human Rights subcommittee on the persistent injustice of his world renowned case.
The press conference, principally hosted by the Abolitionist Center of Pennsylvania, a key legal entity now representing Abu Jamal, will be held at Grace Congregational Church, located at 310 West 139th Street in Harlem, between Edgecombe Avenue and Frederick Douglass Blvd.
The Press Conference will take place at 6pm.
Among the presenters will be Bret Grote of the Abolitionist Center, and now one of AbuJamal’s attorneys, Dr Ricardo Alvarez, medical advisor for AbuJamal, among others.
The Petition is a 68 page document a link to which is included in the attached documents here, detailIng the long standing callously inhumane character of AbuJamal’s detention and the suppression of exculpatory evidence.
On December 9, 1981, AbuJamal walked into a confrontation involving his brother and others and Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. In the end, AbuJamal was shot and gravely wounded and Faulkner was killed. Abu Jamal had been a member and leading journalist for the Black Panther Party years earlier and was a leading Black journalist in the greater Philadelphia area known for courageously taking on police abuse in his work. He found himself being charged and convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death. Legal observers from across the spectrum over the years have agreed that his case is so rife with injustices and prosecutorial misconduct that he should have, at the very least, been granted a new trial years ago.
Although an international campaign which emerged in the years following his conviction was able to mount pressure to get AbuJamal off of death row, no court has yet allowed the long standing suppressed evidence exonerating him to get on any legal record. In the interim, he, like many incarcerated elderly prisoners, has faced numerous life threatening medical challenges. His troubles find him struggling to save his sight.
Prior to all of this, he has incredibly continued to write as a journalist, penning several books on social justice, including Have Black Lives Ever Mattered, edited by the late Johanna Fernandez, the recently fallen NY based activist scholar who also produced an incredible documentary film on the abuse of his case called Justice On Trial.
The first effort is one of a number of efforts to secure support in the arena of international law over the last 35 years. From being spotlighted in the 1990 Internaitonal Tribunal of Political Prisoners in the United States, to The Spirit of Mandela Human Rights Tribunal of 2021 charging the United States with Genocide, which included on political repression and politcal prisoner cases such as his, and most recently to the UN Working Group of People of African Descent filing an Amicus Brief on his behalf in a recent appeal for a new evidentiary hearing in 2022.
“It’s Malcolm’s line,” said an emphatic Zayid Muhammad, chair of the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee.
“He went to his death teaching us that we will never get justice in American courts without first embarrassing and isolating this country on its deadly hypocritical violation of our human rights first.”
“We support this effort to the fullest like we always have,” he finished.
He will join supporters at this important press conference…
