Event Information

Date:

Wed, 2017-08-30 (All day)

The Committee to Stop FBI Repression is circulating the following call in day in solidarity with the anti-racists who pulled down the racist Confederate statue in Durham, NC. Please call-in tomorrow—Wed. Aug. 30!

National Call-In Day: Stop Durham Witch-hunt! Drop the Charges!

Fb event: https://www.facebook.com/events/931342290346134

Weds. August 30 – All Day

Call Sheriff Mike Andrews and demand that he end the witch-hunt against activists involved in fighting white supremacy!

Call Durham, N.C., Sheriff Andrews’ office at (919) 560-0897 and demand:

  • Stop the witch-hunt on activists protesting white supremacy
  • Drop the charges against those already arrested

Over the past two weeks, thirteen activists have been arrested and slapped with outrageous felony and misdemeanor charges for their defense of the Durham community against white supremacists, first in relation to the toppling of a Confederate statue in front the Durham courthouse on Aug. 14, and then for protesting in response to a planned Ku Klux Klan rally on Aug. 18. Most recently, three more activists were issued warrants on Aug. 28; two were arrested the day before.

Sheriff Andrews recently attempted unsuccessfully to prosecute activists with Inside-Outside Alliance for protest charges, and was exposed for his exaggerated attempts to target demonstrators. These arrests are clearly a form of retaliation against the movement at large.

Cruel & Unusual: Demand Durham Sheriff Mike Andrews End the Witchhunt Against Anti-Racist Activists & Be Held Accountable for His Criminal Treatment of the People of Durham!

https://southernvision.ourpowerbase.net/civicrm/petition/sign?sid=23&reset=1

Over the past two weeks, thirteen activists have been arrested and slapped with outrageous felony and misdemeanor charges for their defense of the Durham community against white supremacists, first in relation to the toppling of a Confederate statue in front of the Durham courthouse on Aug. 14, and then for protesting in response to a planned Ku Klux Klan rally on Aug. 18. Most recently, three more activists were issued warrants on Aug. 28 and turned themselves in; two were arrested the day before.

Sheriff Andrews recently attempted unsuccessfully to prosecute activists with Inside-Outside Alliance for protest charges, and was exposed for his exaggerated attempts to target demonstrators. The IOA has held weekly protests at the jail for more than a year. These arrests are clearly a form of retaliation against the movement at large.

The jail that Andrews runs is an institution committed to the preservation and perpetuation of white supremacy. Under Andrews’ tenure, at least five people – Matthew McCain, Dennis McMurray, Niecey Fennell, Terry Lee, and Raphael Bennett — have died in the Durham County Jail due to the criminal conditions inside. Detainees have described the jail as being designed to “break you” and to “make you want to kill yourself.” Andrews has gone out of his way to cover up these deaths, and has made patently false statements about the conditions of the jail. Meanwhile, he has frustrated attempts by the community and elected officials to audit the conditions there, and has lied about the Durham County Sheriff’s collaboration with Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement (ICE).

In what can be described as nothing other than cruel and unusual, Andrews has recently taken steps to completely restrict in-person visitation for Durham County jail detainees, and only allow video visitation.

We say no more!

Stop the witchhunt against activists involved in protesting white supremacy!

Drop the charges against the 13 anti-racist activists!

End the criminal treatment of the people of Durham inside the Durham County Jail!

Lamont Lilly in his own words

http://clarioncontentmedia.com/2017/08/lamont-lilly-in-his-own-words/

Lamont Lilly is on the front lines for justice, personally, putting his feet, his head, his heart, and his words out there daily. This Durham based writer and thinker was the 2016 Workers World Party, Vice-Presidential Candidate. He is a journalist and a poet.

LL: Well, as the great woman warrior Ramona Africa once stated, “Don’t be afraid to be a revolutionary. We have nothing to lose.”

Those who have nothing to lose, have nothing to fear. But we do have to get better organized. As freedom fighters, we also have to multiply. We need more people, more bodies, more minds, more skill sets. But at least people are having some real conversations, now. You know, I think ignorance is the largest purveyor of fear. Once we dismantle the ignorance, we can get some freedom, some justice, some liberation. But we have to be honest with each other and listen to each other.

Detroit, September 2, 2017: Justice for Desmond Grimes!

Members of the Moratorium NOW! Coalition and Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) at their Monday night meeting voted unanimously to hold a demonstration on Sat. Sept. 2 at 1:00pm to demand justice for Desmond Grimes, a 15-year-old youth killed as a result of being tased by the Michigan State Police on the east side of Detroit.

Grimes was unarmed when he was chased on a ATV and shot with a taser gun plunging to his death. The Michigan State police officer involved has not been arrested on indicted. Instead he has been granted paid leave.

Although the Detroit police claim they are conducting an “independent investigation” if this had been a resident who caused an officer’s death undoubtedly a suspect would have been detained with no bail and subjected to a swift prosecution.

We will also demand that tasers be banned in the city and that no military hardware from the Pentagon be utilized after the lifting of the partial ban by President Trump.

In addition, we condemn the president’s pardon of Chief Arpaio in Arizona, along with the justice department’s suspension of consent decrees involving police departments across the United States. These measures are giving a green light to law-enforcement agencies to utilize lethal force against civilians.

This protest action will take place at 1:00pm on Woodward at Congress next to the beginning of the Q-Line route near City Hall.

All progressive organizations in the city are encouraged to endorse and attend.

Border Patrol, Suspend the Checkpoints During Hurricane Harvey

https://action.mijente.net/petitions/border-patrol-suspend-the-checkpoints-during-hurricane-harvey

Why is this important?

When Tropical Storm Sandy hit New York City, immigration enforcement announced that the highest priority was promoting “life saving and life promoting activities, the safe evacuation of people who are leaving the impacted area, and the maintenance of public order.”

With that in mind, it suspended any immigration enforcement activity associated with the evacuation because of recognition of the deadly risk and public disorder that would cause.

With Hurricane Harvey approaching, Border Patrol has announced its intention to keep check points open: causing extreme traffic, endangering drivers, and potentially making people who need to evacuate decide to stay behind in the storm out of fear of interaction and interrogation.

Demand the suspension of checkpoints so that all drivers know that they can get to safety quickly and securely.
