Labor Forum August 28, 2017 Edition: Black August & Anti-Racist Worker Organizing

https://wrfglaborforum.org/2017/08/27/wrfg-labor-forum-program-on-monday-august-28/

https://www.facebook.com/LaborForumWrfg/

As The Labor Forum closes out Black August with a recounting of many more historic dates in the people’s struggle for liberation and against racism, repression and white supremacy, we will hear from members of UNITE HERE about the need for Atlanta to require a retention policy for workers when approving new contracts for airport restaurant, retail and service bids. This interview will be from 4:15-4:30pm.

At 4:30, UE 150 organizer, Dante Strobino will call in to discuss the anti-racist mobilizing work being done in Durham, NC and the connection to the fight for union recognition for public service as well as farm workers in NC. Strobino is one of the nine people arrested following the Aug. 14 toppling of the confederate statue in that city.

The Labor Forum brings news and analysis of issues affecting working and poor people in Georgia, the US and the world every Monday from 4-5pm on WRFG 89.3FM.
Guests interviewed on The Labor Forum are union members, low-wage workers, community members, students and youth fighting for their rights on the job, in their neighborhoods and schools, and in prisons and detention centers.

—————————————–
“Freedom” is a grand word, but under the banner of freedom for industry the most predatory wars were waged, under the banner of freedom of labour, the working people were robbed. The modern use of the term “freedom of criticism” contains the same inherent falsehood. Those who are really convinced that they have made progress in science would not demand freedom for the new views to continue side by side with the old, but the substitution of the new views for the old.

-Lenin, “What is to be done?”

For the inaugeral Marxist-Leninist Reading Group, we will be reading the preface and sections I and II of Lenin’s “What is to be done?”

‘Unprecedented’ storm exposes gov’t failure as Harvey covers Houston with a lake

‘…The projected cuts in Trump’s budget for Homeland Security and the National Weather Service will directly impinge on how states and cities prepare for national emergencies.

Trump wants to cut $667 million out of FEMA programs and grants that help cities and states prepare Pre-Disaster Mitigation Programs. He wants to cut the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which includes the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center, by 16 percent. Research on the oceans and the atmosphere, which strives to understand the effects of global warming, would be cut by 32 percent.

These cuts unmask the real reason behind the chaotic, unplanned response to Harvey: Trump and the big bourgeoisie don’t want to spend any money or effort to help the poor, the needy, the oppressed and the workers survive.”

August 30: National Call-In Day: Stop Durham Witchhunt! Drop the Charges!

Hosted by International Action Center

Call Sheriff Mike Andrews and demand that he end the witchhunt against activists involved in fighting white supremacy!

Call Durham, N.C., Sheriff Andrews’ office at (919) 560-0897 and demand:
– Stop the witchhunt on activists protesting white supremacy
– Drop the charges against those already arrested

Over the past two weeks, thirteen activists have been arrested and slapped with outrageous felony and misdemeanor charges for their defense of the Durham community against white supremacists, first in relation to the toppling of a Confederate statue in front the Durham courthouse on Aug. 14, and then for protesting in response to a planned Ku Klux Klan rally on Aug. 18. Most recently, three more activists were issued warrants on Aug. 28; two were arrested the day before.

Sheriff Andrews recently attempted unsuccessfully to prosecute activists with Inside-Outside Alliance for protest charges, and was exposed for his exaggerated attempts to target demonstrators. These arrests are clearly a form of retaliation against the movement at large.

Black Lives Matter in Cuba

http://www.cuba-solidarity.org.uk/news/article/3467/black-lives-matter-in-cuba

“If there ever was a place where black lives truly matter, it’s Cuba”, writes Andrew King in an opinion article for TeleSUR.

As activists unite to confront white supremacy in the United States, it is important for us to study other societies outside the U.S. that have made true strides in racial and economic justice, in order to better envision the world that we want to create.

After listening to President Donald Trump’s June speech on Cuba, in which he reversed all the steps that the Obama administration had made to improve relations, one might not think to look towards this island nation as such an exemplary society. However, one must understand the history of Cuba to see why the U.S. government is escalating the six-decade war and embargo against the socialist country. It is not hard to see that the issue of race is central to the capitalist empire’s war on this socialist stronghold…”

Milwaukee, August 28: 200 Nights of Freedom Kickoff

Hosted by March on Milwaukee: 50th Anniversary

200 E Wells Street, Milwaukee City Hall, 5:30-7:30 P.M.

The March on Milwaukee: 50th Anniversary Coordinating Committee is hosting the 200 Nights of Freedom Kick-Off in the Rotunda at City Hall (200 East Wells Street) on August 28, 2017, from 5:30-8:00pm.

This event kicks off 200 Nights of Freedom, an initiative recognizing our local civil rights heroes and re-igniting Milwaukee’s simmering spirit of activism through 200 nights of public events, policy initiatives, digital dialogue, and other programming.

Networking and socializing begins at 5:30pm and the evening’s program will run from 6:00-7:30pm. Refreshments will be provided. Speakers include NAACP Youth Council members and Commandos, as well as young activists, with a key note speech from Congresswoman Gwen Moore.

The March on Milwaukee 50th Coordinating Committee is an intergenerational mix of artists, activists, professionals, academics, and elders who participated in the original marches.

Historical context:
Beginning on August 28, 1967, the Milwaukee NAACP Youth Council/Commandos, Father James Groppi, Alderperson Vel Phillips and a host of activists and community members marched for over 200 consecutive nights to demand an end to housing segregation. The marches signified Milwaukee’s contribution to the Black Freedom Movement in America and helped inspire federal fair housing legislation. This moment was indeed the pinnacle of civil rights activism in Milwaukee.
