World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU]: Solidarity with Momentive Workers

Solidarity with workers of “Momentive Performance Materials” chemical plant in

Waterford, New York, U.S.A.

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 92 million workers in 126

countries all over the world, extends its firm solidarity and internationalism with

the more than 700 workers of “Momentive Performance Materials” chemical plant

in Waterford, New York, U.S.A., who have been on strike since last November.

We stand on the side of these workers who fight against wage reductions that

started a few years ago and reach even 50% of their salaries, as well as the

elimination of pension benefits and the new cut of rights like health care benefits

that is being planned by the company.

The WFTU strongly denounces the reduction of workers’ rights for the increase of

the company’s profits, and calls on the workers to continue their struggle. We also

call upon the trade unions and workers of the region to support the workers of

Momentive Performance Materials. Their struggle against the attack to their rights

and for decent working conditions must continue dynamically for the benefit of

them and of the working class of their country.

Urgent Call to Action: Water Crisis in the Prison, DOC in Contempt of Mumia Court Order

http://www.bringmumiahome.com/

February 6, 2017

Urgent Call to Action:
Water Crisis in the Prison, DOC in Contempt of Mumia Court Order

From Flint and Standing Rock to SCI Mahanoy and prisons across the country, people are defending the life-saving right to clean water.

At SCI Mahanoy, the Pennsylvania prison that houses Mumia Abu-Jamal, the water is unsafe for prisoners to bathe in, shower in and drink.  It is “dirty, brackish, turbid, even black water” —that is how Mumia Abu-Jamal describes the dramatic situation in a grievance he filed last week. The grievance includes 6 demands, including 1) the immediate provision of an alternative source of “clean, fresh, safe, and untainted water” for bathing and drinking and 2) “testing of the water piped into the infirmary tub and showers.”

Please help amplify the voices of all prisoners. Take action. Call the prison and publicize Mumia’s grievance widely (see transcript below).

As you know, Mumia has a severe skin ailment, a symptom of his untreated HEP C. The water contamination at the prison, therefore, poses a serious threat to his life through infection. For this reason Mumia has refused the three baths a week that prison doctors prescribed to alleviate his symptoms. In addition to violating the January 2017 court order of a federal judge mandating that Mumia be immediately treated with the HEP C cure, which is the root cause of his skin problem, the DOC is in violation of its own woefully inadequate “baths prescription” for the treatment of his skin condition and HEP C.

TAKE ACTION. Call the prison, the DOC & the PA Gov

LANGUAGE TO USE and DEMANDS

Hi, I am a concerned citizen from______________. I am calling to demand that the Mahanoy prison administration

  1. Immediately provide all prisoners clean water for bathing, showering and drinking.

In addition, I am demanding that the institution

  2. Comply with Judge Mariani’s court ruling of January 3, 2017, which ordered the immediate treatment of Mumia Abu Jamal with the Hep C cure by the DOC. Give Mumia the cure he needs.

Officials to Call:

  1. Theresa Del Balso, Superintendent SCI Mahanoy: 570-773-2158 x8102 | 570-783-2008 Fax | 301 Morea Road, Frackville PA 1793

  2. John Wetzel, PA DOC: 717-728-4109 | 717-728-4178 Fax | ra-contactdoc@poc.gov | 1920 Technology Pkwy, Mechanicsburg PA 17050

  3. Tom Wolf, PA Gvrnr: 717-787-2500 |  | 508 Main Capitol Building, Harrisburg PA 17120

IN ADDITION, TAKE ACTION IN THE STREETS.

RALLY in Philadelphia at the Governor’s Office

When: Thursday, February 9, 2017 — 4-6 PM

Where: 200 Broad Street, Philadelphia

UW-Milwaukee, Feb. 9: Academics United – No Visa and Immigration Ban: UWM

11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Feb. 9., UW-Milwaukee, Spaights Plaza
This rally is being held concurrently at many university campuses across the U.S.(1) What has happened?

On Friday Jan. 27th 2017, president Donald Trump signed an executive order (EO) that bans the nationals of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States with any type of immigrant or non-immigrant visa. This action is also banning refugees and US permanent residents (green card holders). According to the estimations, around 134 million people are affected by this action [1]. Although the EO is temporary and the visa ban is in place for 90 days, based on a CNN interview with a White House official, we are in a state of uncertainty as this might be the initial step to establish a broader ban.

(2) Who are we?

We are a diverse group of academics attending universities all across the United States. We all have dreams of not only receiving the best education, but also serving the nation that has granted us this valuable opportunity. We have similar views, plans, and ambitions as our neighboring colleagues and we too are looking for a better future in this country that has welcomed us with open arms.

(3) How are we affected by the recent action?

According to the EO, we are banned from entering the US for at least 90 days. If authorities decide to extend the 3 month period, we will not be able to visit our families back home. Many of us are seeing all of our hard work and achievements being reduced to none. We are facing a very heartbreaking dilemma in the midst of this difficult time and are looking to you, our friends and colleagues to stand united.

(4) Who else is looking for a solution to this action?

ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) is challenging the constitutionality of this EO in federal court, and has earned a temporary stay of this action. This development, although very encouraging, is temporary which means more consequential legal battles lie ahead.

NIAC (National Iranian American Council) is actively looking for solutions to this action.

(5) What is the mission of “Academics United – No Visa and Immigration Ban” rallies?

To shine a light on the impact of this action on thousands of honest and ambitious students. The visa ban is displeasing and politics should never be imposes on the academic community.

(6) When and where is the rally?

Dear Sheriff Clarke,

Please do not enroll your department in the 287g program, which would have your officers deputized to act as ICE agents, separating thousands of Wisconsin families and subjecting everyone to a campaign of racial profiling and anti-immigrant terror.

Why is this important?

Sheriff Clarke has said that he intends to enroll the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office in the 287g program, which would have his officers deputized to act as immigration agents. 287g has been totally discredited nationwide. Where it has been implemented, it has lead to an increase in racial profiling and constitutional rights violations. Communities that enrolled in the program, like Joe Arpaio’s Maricopa County, Arizona, have wasted millions defending themselves in civil rights lawsuits, while serious crimes have gone ignored. The program would make tens of thousands of people in Milwaukee County afraid to report crimes, making all less safe.
