Sept. 18, Milwaukee: Cuba and the Politics of Class, Race and Gender Justice Featuring Professor Norma Guillard
Sept. 18: 5 p.m., Marquette University, Milwaukee, Cudahy Hall
Lecture and Q&A: in Spanish w/English translation, 5:00-6:00
Film, ‘Viviendo al límite’: in Spanish with English and subtitles, 6:00-7:30
A social psychologist from Santiago de Cuba, NORMA GUILLARD is one of the first Cuban women of her generation to call herself a feminist. She primarily works on the issues of gender, race, sexual orientation, and issues of diversity and identity in a Cuban and Caribbean context. As a Cuban of African descent, Guillard has contributed much to the lively debates on race and racism in Cuba.
About the film: Viviendo al límite (Living to the limit, dir Belkis Vega Belmonte; a documentary. Cuba, 2004, 87’. In Spanish with English subtitles) is a moving human portrait of a group of people diagnosed as HIV-positive in Cuba. The film uses the techniques of “playback-theater” and psychodrama to represent and artistically recast scenes from the lives of its protagonists.

On the 5th Anniversary of the Federal $700 Billion Bank Bailout . . .
A CALL FOR AN INTERNATIONAL PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY AGAINST THE BANKS AND AGAINST AUSTERITY
SATURDAY & SUNDAY
OCTOBER 5 & 6, 2013
GRAND CIRCUS PARK
Woodward & Adams
DETROIT, MICHIGAN, USA
We call on all activists fighting banker-imposed austerity – here in the U.S. and worldwide – to come to Detroit, Michigan, on October 5 and 6, 2013. Join the people of this city under siege in convening the International People’s Assembly Against the Banks and Against Austerity.
Join us in Detroit on October 5 & 6.
Join us in Detroit on October 5-6 to demand:
* Cancel the debt to the banks which is strangling our schools, cities, states and countries.
* Guarantee workers’ jobs and pensions and services for the community. No union busting.
* End undemocratic, racist emergency management of our cities and schools.
* A jobs program funded by the banks to put the unemployed to work rebuilding our cities. The banks owe our communities billions of dollars for the destruction they have caused.
* Moratorium on all foreclosures and foreclosure-related evictions. Housing is a right.
* Repudiate student loan debt. Education must be free and available to all. Increase funding for public education.
* Stop racism and attacks on immigrants, women, the LGBTQ community and people with disabilities.
* The federal government must bail out the people, not the banks.

We need to stand up for our public schools now more than ever! We demand the following because all of our children deserve a world-class public education!
• Fully fund public schools
• Keep a strong taxpayer voice in school governance
• Stop privatization of public education
• Hold voucher schools accountable
• Require quality physical infrastructure for all schools
Public school students, parents, teachers and other staff members from the Milwaukee metro area and state are encouraged to participate to demonstrate our pride in and support for our public schools. We are looking for student drum lines, school bands and other performers to march. School t-shirts, banners, and signs are welcome. Student-made art (signs, banners, etc) declaring pride and support for public schools are also welcome.
Committee To Stop Fight FBI Repression Fights On
The Committee to Stop FBI Repression wants to remind our friends and supporters that it is nearly three years since the FBI raided seven homes and subpoenaed 23 anti-war and international solidarity activists to a Grand Jury in Chicago. Assistant US Attorney Barry Jonas has yet to announce the end of the “ongoing investigation” or to return the belongings of Palestinian-American leader Hatem Abudayyeh of Chicago. It is by building the antiwar movement and an intertwined movement against political repression that we will defeat US warmongers and those who see themselves as the political police in charge of an increasingly repressive state. There will be a protest in Minneapolis on the anniversary.
ALSO:
The FBI is increasing its spying on and harassment of Syrian-Americans and others who are anti-war. This should prove a big job because opinion polls show that most people are opposed to the plans of President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry starting another US war in the Middle East. For now the US attacks are stalled, but be on guard. See this completely biased piece by the NY Times: FBI Spying on Antiwar Syrian-Americans
“The F.B.I. has increased its surveillance of Syrians inside the United States in response to concerns that a military strike against the government of President Bashar al-Assad could lead to terrorist attacks here or against American allies and interests abroad, according to current and former senior United States officials.”
