& ‘Debt Service’ To The Banks
4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Chicago Public Library, Humboldt Park Branch

Kedzie, across from the park)
For directions, please call (312) 744-2244

Jerry Goldberg, a Detroit People’s Attorney and leader of the Moratorium Now Coalition, will speak at this meeting about how the banks – in complicity with the federal government which bails out the banks with virtually every foreclosure thru the takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac-are responsible for the foreclosure epidemic. He will speak on the immediate demand for a national two-year moratorium to stop foreclosures and the national conference being planned in Detroit March 31 to press for this demand. This demand is especially timely in light of the tremendous growth of anti-foreclosure/eviction actions across the country.

Also speaking at the meeting is Willie “J.R.” Fleming, a community leader for over a decade and a seasoned human rights organizer with such groups as the Chicago Coalition to Protect Public Housing, and the Hip Hop Congress, J.R. was a co-founder of the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign (AEC) in 2009.

National Coalition Decries NYPD Spying As Symptomatic of Erosion of Civil Freedoms

http://www.civilfreedoms.org/?p=9922

A coalition of national and local organizations, whose mission is to educate the public about the erosion of civil and political freedoms in our society has issued a statement protesting the surveillance of Muslim students by the NYPD. The Associated Press has revealed that from 2006–2009, the New York Police Department was carrying out illegal surveillance of Muslim students and their organizations as far removed from their jurisdiction as universities in upstate New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, indeed all over the northeast with neither cause nor warrant (see AP Report).

Hands Off Our Pensions!

From the American Federation of Government Employees:

Shameful & Outrageous

Last week, Congress chose to protect its own pensions while slashing those of federal workers.

In order to extend unemployment benefits, members of the House forced a fourfold increase for what new federal employees will pay toward their pensions. Meanwhile, Members of Congress awarded themselves the opportunity to retire early at no cost. There were 10 different ways, including eliminating subsidies for big profitable corporations, they could have funded this. But to score political points, Rep. Camp and other right-wing leaders in the House went after federal employees.

Email your Representative right now.  Tell them to strongly oppose any more cuts to federal employee pensions or pay.
