Fundraiser For #OKwalk4kids Lunch and Buses

https://www.gofundme.com/together-we-are-stronger-march

Oklahoma educators, support professionals, parents, students, and community members have been PACKING the Oklahoma state Capitol this week to speak up on behalf of Oklahoma’s children!

Can you support them by buying them lunch?

We’re raising money to buy lunch of anyone attending the #OKwalk4kids on Thursday, April 5, 2018.

Oklahoma’s per pupil expenditures rank among the lowest in the nation. Oklahoma public schools have seen a 28% reduction in school funding since 2008.  This has left our students with broken desks and books that are older than the students reading them.

The Oklahoma Education Association is a non-profit association representing public education employees in Oklahoma and has been at the forefront of multiple efforts to increase education funding in Oklahoma the last several years.

Donations are not tax deductible and will be kept in a segregated account used only for these purposes.  Any funds remaining after the successful conclusion of this effort will be donated to Oklahoma public school charities or foundations to assist public education in Oklahoma.

You can follow our progress at StandWithTeachers.org. Thank you for your support!

Chicago, April 22: Protest the “Sons of the Confederacy”

Hosted by SWS Chicago

Every year, the Sons of Confederate Veterans hold a memorial service to honor the Confederate soldiers who died at Camp Douglas. They have this service at the confederate mound in Oak Woods Cemetery, on the grounds where Ida B Wells is buried and only blocks from Emmett Till Rd.

This year let’s show up to stand against this white supremacist gathering! Meet outside the cemetery entrance at 67th and Greenwood.

The Oklahoma capitol is full of fired up protesters chanting April 3, 2018. Seems like there might be at least as many people or even more than yesterday. The energy is way higher than yesterday and people are talking about striking all week or longer if necessary to win funding for schools and all state workers. (Photo by teacher Stephanie Price)

Milwaukee, April 10: Students & Educators Deserve a Budget That Honors the Classroom

Hosted by Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association

No automatic alt text available.

5225 W Vliet, Milwaukee Public Schools, 5-8 P.M. April 10, 2018

We just finished our meet and confer session with MPS Administration to find out if they got the message at Thursday night’s school board meeting. Hundreds of our members delivered over 3,000 time petitions and loudly demanded more from MPS administration. They aren’t listening!

Rather than listen to educator demands for “Time, Heath, and a Raise,” administration laid out the largest cuts to our healthcare and benefits since Act 10. They also gave a flat “NO” to educator demands for time to better service our students. This means it’s time for educators to take the next step in our plan to win for our students. This district is not broke. We know there are enough good school board members that will use the school district’s resources to help our students. We are resolved to show up and make sure these voices are heard.

On April 10th Administration will officially propose these draconian cuts to the school board. Our members MUST show up and speak out.

We need everyone to wear MTEA green all week, the week after Spring Break.

Southern Workers Assembly: Solidarity with Oklahoma Teacher & State Worker Walkouts!

Solidarity with Oklahoma Teacher & State Worker Walkouts!

Deepen the class struggle, strengthen our unions and fight against austerity!

The Southern Workers Assembly sends our solidarity to the education workers and their unions across Oklahoma that will stage walkouts in school districts across the state on April 2. This bold action comes on the heels of the 9-day strike by education workers in West Virginia that has inaugurated a new period of fightback particularly by public school workers. Workers in the South are playing a leading role in this rising tide of resistance – in addition to West Virginia and Oklahoma, teachers in Kentucky have staged walk-outs, along with Jersey City, New Jersey, Arizona, and elsewhere.

While conditions in each area are unique, they have opened a wider struggle against the crushing impact of years of cutbacks and austerity measures that have crippled public education and public services, driven down wages and working conditions, taken aim at workers’ ability to build our unions, and deprived our communities of many vitally needed resources. All this while banks, oil and gas companies, and other big corporations receive massive handouts. Workers in Oklahoma are showing the way forward by going out on strike on April 2, and demonstrating to the world what is possible when workers stick together and take bold action. http://southernworker.org/2018/04/solidarity-with-oklahoma-teacher-state-worker-walkouts/
