January 30: National SDS Call In: Say No to Betsy Devos! Education For All!

On January 31, the US Senate* will be holding a final hearing on President Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos as our Secretary of Education.

We will be hosting a CALL-IN DAY on Jan. 30th, to say NO to her selection, and to say YES to Education For All. (Info Below)

BACKGROUND:

Betsy DeVos is infamous as a national advocate of the privatization of education. She has spent her career promoting the diversion of public funds for education towards supporting charter schools, for-profit schools, and supplying vouchers that will go to private schools.

She has also come under scrutiny as a shareholder in an investment company that invests in private schools. She has shown more interest in filling her own pockets, while public schools in poor, low-income, multinational neighborhoods are starved and closed.

Join us as we say NO TO BETSY DEVOS. Help us say YES to Education For All: increased funding for education (not war or deportations), free tuition, equal access for undocumented students, the enforcement of affirmative action for Black, Latinx, and Chicanx students.

CALL THE HEADS OF THE COMMITTEE HOSTING THE HEARING:

1. Lamar Alexander
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions:
(202) 224-4944

2. Patty Murray
Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions
(202) 224-2621

If you want to call your local Senator as well, please find them via this link: http://www.help.senate.gov/about/members . Then click on their respective pages, find their ph #, and call, call, call!

SCRIPT:

Say:

“Hi, my name is _____, and I am a student/employee/resident of ________. I say NO to the selection of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. I say NO to any other choices who support reducing public education funds in order to feed private, for-profit institutions. or supply vouchers that would replace public K-12. Instead, I support Education For All, increased funding to public schools, equal access to education, and free tuition. I believe education is a right for all, not a luxury for the rich and the powerful. I will protest DeVos, her policies, and her allies for years to come; on Tuesday, please do not vote for or promote her as a nominee.”

Milwaukee, January 31: Alto a la separación de familias! End the separation of families!

(English below)

¡ENCAUSAR Y PROCESAR A SHERIFF CLARKE !!

¡NINGUNA PROHIBICIÓN MUSULMAN, NUNGUNA PROHINICIÓN !!

¡ALTO A LA SEPARACIÓN DE FAMILIAS !!

Solidaridad.

Join us this Tuesday to march against deportations, raids, and the separation of families!

The Trump adminstration has made every effort to intimidate and weaken the undocumented community.

On Wednesday, January 25th, eight men were forefully intercepted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Milwaukee, another four were detained in Waukesha and one each in Greenfield, New Berlin, Oconomowoc and Pewaukee.

All 16 arrested are Mexican males.

This enforcement surge is the latest effort by ICE to generalize, criminalize, and dehumanize the undocumented community in order to facilitate the racist and intolerant programs established by the Trump administration.

Operations like these are often used by ICE to justify the arrest of undocumented people, including those with no prior criminal record. Good, working people are being targeted for petty crimes or having an expired visa. Everyday obligations such as driving to work or getting to school have become criminalized under Trump. These types of operations are dangerous, racist, and unjust. They cause paranoia in the undocumented community and damage the strength of our people.

On Saturday, January 28th, hundreds of people, many of whom have green cards and visas, were denied entry into the U.S. as a result of an executive order issued by Trump on Friday. The executive order bars citizens of 7 Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. for the next 90 days and suspends the admission of all refugees for 120 days.

We are not alone in this struggle and we will continue to challange ignorance and bigotry wherever it may be. Our brothers and sisters are being unfairly targeted as this tide of anti-Muslim racism continues to manifest itself under the guise of national security. Now is the time to UNITE & FIGHT!

Public pressure has already forced a U.S. federal judge to halt the full implementation of Trump’s executive action. We must maintain this momentum and make even greater progress until our families achieve the safety and peace of mind that they deserve.

The people of this city will not be fooled!
We will NOT stand idly by as our familes are torn apart!

We denounce the actions taken against our Muslim brothers and sisters and allies in the struggle.

WE DEMAND THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF ALL DETAINEES !!

WE DEMAND AN END TO THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN ICE AND THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE !!

WE DEMAND AN END TO DEPORTATIONS AND RAIDS !!

INDICT AND CONVICT SHERIFF CLARKE !!

NO MUSLIM BAN, NO BAN FOR ANYONE !!

NO HUMAN IS ILLEGAL !!

NO SEPARATION OF FAMILIES !!

Solidarity.

Sara Flounders: Only massive people’s resistance can take on and take down Trump and his appointed nest of vipers

By Sara Flounders, Workers.org

January 28, 2017: Tonight was a vibrant display of People Power. I was among many thousands of protesters at JFK International Airport in New York City.

Trump’s executive order, a racist ban on Muslims traveling from 7 countries, who are targets of the U.S. military, unleashed a firestorm. News swept the country that passengers from targeted countries with Visas were stopped at U.S. customs and were not permitted to enter the United States. The speed of Trump’s proclamation was intended to demoralize and overwhelm the whole population. The opposite happened!

Every minute of tonight was an incredible, empowering experience! Even going out to the airport other passengers on the platform as we waited for the subway and then on the subway cheered us and shook our hands, took pictures, posed next to us and wished us success. Usually, you only get stony stares or fearful glances if you are on a subway with other protesters carrying signs to a demonstration. [Continued Below]

When we switched from the subway to the AirTrain to get out to JFK airport police formed a line to try to stop us. Only people with airline tickets would be permitted through the turnstiles. Our chants of “When Muslim Lives Are Under Attack, What do we do? Stand Up! Fight Back” was picked up by hundreds of people who were stopped. They finally backed down as we all chanted non-stop “Shut It Down! Shut It Down!”

This is when we suddenly realized that we would not just be a few hundred people at the Airport. Many thousands were on their way and were refusing to be stopped. With chants, cheers and raw determination they just swept past the police.

The entire International Arrivals Terminal was overwhelmed by the demonstrators. They lined the railing of the parking garages and blocked the traffic on the roads.

Even while chanting, everyone was also on their phones – texting, tweeting, networking, connecting to friends to hurry out to the airport to challenge Trump’s anti-Muslim Travel Ban.

Information swept the crowds and jumped over social media. Airport workers waved and cheered. The taxi drivers, so many of them immigrants, had called a work stoppage on trips to the airport in solidarity with the actions and against the ban.

The protests went viral! Word came of protests at airports across the U.S. Each protest, each city, its own eruption.

Then Federal Judge Ann Donnelly at U.S. District Court in Brooklyn granted a stay or stop of deportations of all those detained on entry to the U.S. at airports nationwide. This was a legal action filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. Minutes later Federal Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria VA issued a temporary restraining order to block for 7 days the removal of green-card holders detained at Dulles International Airport.

These rulings are a short legal pause propelled by sudden massive pressure from below.

Today was a giant step in a protracted struggle. The massive protests on January 20 and 21 gave new confidence.

But the lesson of today is that only the power of the people can force the courts to act. It is a valuable lesson. It is becoming increasingly clear to millions of people that voting won’t help them. The whole established order is frozen in crisis. Only massive people’s resistance can take on and take down Trump and his appointed nest of vipers.
